A modern look, moisture resistant, brighter light output fixture that consumed less energy which exceeded my expectations!
Bought this Hamilton Hills Flush Mount 12" LED ceiling light to replace a standard bulb fixture in my bathroom. My objectives were to have a more modern look, moisture resistant, brighter light output fixture that consumed less energy. This fixture delivered on all counts, plus it was very inexpensive. It was very easy to install. I only needed a medium size Phillips head screwdriver. Due to the fact that the old fixture was mounted with a cross-bar I did have to remove that as the Hamilton Hills unit mounts using the screw tabs on a standard 4" ceiling outlet box. The instructions did not say what to do with the large translucent "rubber band" that came with the unit. I figured it out - you use the "rubber band" to cover the end of the fixture that contacts the ceiling to keep the edge of the fixture protected from contact and presumably to create a small seal. The "rubber band" was easy enough to put on the end as it has a slight groove and you just press it on. The real trick was keeping the rubber band on while moving the fixture around during installation. I had to stop several times in the process and re-install the "rubber band" so that once the fixture was mounted and i was tightening the screws that the "rubber band was smooth and properly in place on the edge. This was the worst part of the installation - so, all in all, pretty straight-forward if you know how to replace a typical ceiling fixture. Once in place the rubber "band" created a nice seal for the fixture against my textured ceiling. The light output is at least triple that of my old fixture which had a 15w Edison CFL bulb. The Hamilton Hills fixture provides brighter, more evenly distributed light, and consumes much less energy. The installation instructions also didn't include any directions for removing the diffuser lens, but after a couple of minutes I figured out you gently press the lens up a little and twist it. There are 3 small pins or nubs round the edge of the flush mount lens and it just sort of screws on and off. The lens is plastic and I wasn't sure I would like that as I'd have referred a glass one, but now that it's installed the plastic looks fine and I love the light put put and the general appearance of the fixture, so I'm okay with it being plastic. Frankly, I've been surprised at how much a simple inexpensive ceiling fixture like this could make in my bathroom. There are multiple much more expensive fixtures in the bathroom - four 23w LED down lights above the sink/counter and two wall mounted LED sconces with a total of 6 15w LED bulbs in them so this fixture is really not necessary. It is just the one fixture closest to the shower. I never used the old fixture it cast shadows and although it had an "instant on" bulb, like most CFL units, it too it a few minutes to "warm up" in order to provide full light. This Hamilton Hills fixture is truly instant on, no shadows, and much brighter light. I actually like having it on and am for the first time using this fixture. I had no idea how much it would transform my bathroom when I ordered it. Needless to say, I love it. I hope it's durability measures up to it's delivery on all my original objectives. For such a cheap fixture Hamilton Hills has really exceeded my expectations. Before buying this fixture I considered multiple similar units from many sources and manufacturers, some were more than 5 times as expensive - price wasn't a consideration (within reason of course), and I hesitated on buying this unit because it was relatively speaking cheap; however, one week in I'm delighted with the end result.

This light is fanstastic!
Wow, this light is just perfect. I had an old ceiling fixture in a hallway, the kind the hangs down and has a glass globe on it over a standard A19 bulb. I broke the globe while moving furniture and decided "that's it" and looked for something that does not hang down. I found this fixture. It has two wires that come out of it, plus a removable ground wire. I removed the ground wire - my house was built in the 50s and that ceiling box was not metal and there's no ground wire in it. I had to get an adapter from the smaller ceiling box to the 4" box (today's standard) fitting on the fixture but that was no big deal, either. The light took about five minutes to install. The hardest part was keeping the silicone ring "gasket" in place but I'm not even sure that was needed. The light is quite bright - brighter than the 60 watt bulb in the old fixture. I might add a dimmer switch. Now I have a light in that hallway that extends down only about one inch from the ceiling and looks good. I will not smash it ever again by moving furniture through the hall.

Good light with caveats...
Originally purchased an 8" version and liked it so much that i purchased 2 12" versions. Pros: looks good, decent price, good illumination Cons: Only for junction/fixture boxes with 3 1/2 screw spacing. If you have a 2 3/4 screw spacing, you will need to purchase an adapter. So here's the details of my experience. My original purchase of the 8" light was positive outside of the junction box spacing issue. That light was so light that I (don't tell the electrician!) only used one of the screws to mount it. I found installation to be a breeze and the light output was fantastic for my hallway. So, I purchased 2 12" versions for my kitchen...and then the nightmare began. For starters, I ended up going to the hardware store to purchase adapters to mount these lights correctly. (Extra time and cost) Then, I spent the better part of two hours attempting to get the supplied silicon ring to stay on the edge of the light (used to provide a flush mount to the ceiling). Unfortunately, this light's edge seemed a bit banged up and misbent and the silicone ring would not stay on no matter what I tried. (think of that old Christmas song about the frustrated dad testing out his string of lights and you'll get an idea of how I was starting to get). Finally, my daughter offered me her spare two hands to attempt to keep the silicon ring on while I attempted to screw the light into the adapter plate...and just as I was finishing, the silicon ring slipped off the edge.....again! Suffice it to say that at this point, I was on hour 3 of a simple 10 minute light swap and merely threw it some disgusted looks and a couple of curse words (out of earshot of my daughter) and went on with the other light install.....which did take only 10 minutes! So, be warned that the silicon ring may give you issues if your edges are misbent like my errant light. Other than that fiasco, it is a nice looking light that provides very good illumination. Hopefully no-one will notice the partially on/partially off silicon ring on mine!

Simple, Sleek and Effective
Super easy to install. I have lower ceilings so I wanted a slim light that could actually light up the room. These are perfect and are brighter than all of the other lights in my house; however, I can adjust the brightness through the app, verbally with Alexa or through the Alexa app, which is super nice. No more having to lug myself down stairs to turn off the lights. I had an issue with connecting to Alexa where she couldn't identify the lights after install (the Hamilton Hills app identified and worked fine but I couldn't control with Alexa). I point this out because others described a similar issue. I reached out to Hamilton Hills and they were super responsive and researched the problem. They quickly resolved the matter and I was informed their IT department fixed the connectivity issue. I was hesitant to believe as I did nothing on my end but when I tried to connect again, Alexa identified the lights immediately and I can now control with Alexa. If you purchase this light and have the same issue, make sure to email them and they should be able to resolve the problem. I'm changing all my lights to be smart lights so I'll be purchasing more of these soon as well as their other lights for different rooms.

Wonderful!
I love this light. It works seamlessly with my Echo. I simply give a command and it turns on. If it's too bright, I ask Alexa to turn it down to 50%. If it's too dim, well, you get the idea. I can turn it on while at work, via my Echo Gen 3 sitting at my desk. My Gen 3 is tied into my home network. Ain't that cool? If you're asking, "are you sure it turns on?" Well, yes I am. I have a camera and watch it as it turns on! I also noticed, as other reviewers have, it has a very dim eminence when it's turned "off." The first pic is with the light off. I had some ambient light on in the room.. take that into consideration. But, as you can see, there is no shadow from the light. It is really really dim. It doesn't really look that dim in the picture. The last two are with the light at 5%. One picture looks brighter than the other. I suppose it just depends on what the light is reflecting off of. My white curtains seem to make it look brighter, in the picture. If you're on the fence, I highly recommend this light. It was super easy to install. I yanked out my old light and replaced it within minutes. However, the wire nuts, not real great. Good thing I had my stock available. I can't wait to install another one in the bathroom. I think it would look really good in there. Ok, one more comment. The dim feature emanating from the off position, may be just bright enough to be a night light for when I have to get up in the middle of the night.

Good bright light, suitable for a bedroom
Installed this in a guestroom after the ballast failed in the previous fluorescent ring light. We needed a 16" light to cover the same ceiling area as the previous light and this one fit the bill. It was very easy to install, although it would be nice if it included a temporary hook to hang it from the ceiling box while doing the wiring. I did think the light was somewhat expensive, especially given that the color temperature is not adjustable (I smaller $10 LED can replacement lights in my kitchen that have four different color temperature settings), but it works well and the color temperature (3000k) is just fine for a bedroom. It's very bright, which is what I want for a bedroom that's sometimes used as an office, and I am planning to install a dimmer -- I'll update if that causes any issues (I have other supposedly dimmable LED ceiling fixtures that flicker at the low end). The only negative is the price, which I found to be somewhat high, but there's not a lot of choice in 16" lamps, so no regrets.

Cheap, bright, looks good, nicely put together, but has 60Hz flicker
Short form: It looks nice, is inexpensive, installs easy, but unfortunately has 60Hz flicker. Long version: there are six things I look for when getting an LED light. This does okay on two, well on three, and surprisingly fails the one that nothing fails anymore. 1) Efficiency. At 70lm/W this is middle of the road. I much prefer over 100, but it's cheap and about equivalent to a CFL, so narrow pass. 2) CRI. 80 is decent, looks okay to my eye, so pass. 3) For a fixture like this, how does it look? Quite nice, unobtrusive, and the light output with the diffuser attached is very even. Good job. 4) Color temperature. Entirely a matter of preference, but looks pleasant enough at 4000K to me. 5) Flicker. These days almost everything drives the LEDs with DC so there is none, but this surprisingly does not (with the diffuser off you can see the very simple circuitry), so it flickers at 60Hz. I hate 60Hz flicker, so wouldn't want this on any fixture I was going to use regularly. Might not bother others, but fail for me. 6) Longevity. On the plus side, the circuitry is extremely simple so there doesn't appear to be much to break, though on the minus it also has no heatsink whatsoever on the board so it may lose brightness over extended or higher-temperature use. [Updated] Still works fine and has not lost any brightness after 3 years of occasional use, so seems solid enough. Other comments: Includes everything you need to attach to a standard ceiling box (bracket, which I didn't use, screws, the light, the diffuser (the screws are hidden behind the diffuser), and a silicon gasket that goes between the light and the ceiling. My only complaint is that the gasket is really fiddly--it doesn't want to stay on the rim of the light and was a real pain when overhead to get it to stay there long enough to tighten the screws. On the plus side, because it's all surface-mount LEDs, this looks brighter than you'd expect from an 840lm light. If you put a similar-brightness LED (or CFL, or incandescent) bulb into a regular fixture, it's omnidirectional so a lot of the light is probably bouncing off the ceiling or inside of the fixture and being wasted. ALL of the light from this goes straight down, so all 840 lumens end up below the fixture. Installed it looks good, and since it's a rarely used fixture I'm willing to live with the 60Hz flicker. I'll update this review if it ever fails on me.

Great Look and Easy to Install
Review of 5.5 inch version and 8 inch version I took some time to read a number of reviews and comments so I will try to respond to those as much as I can in my review. The size you buy may have something to do with the problems you encounter but I had none with 5.5 or 8 inch. I bought two of the small ones first. I wanted to put a light over my shower and when I had that in decided to add a second to provide more general light for the bathroom. It's small, the lens area is about 3 inches and that is what I wanted. It seems very bright and so I put them on the one circuit with a dimmer. Afterward I decided that it was good but I needed a broader light especially when dimmed, so I replaced them with the larger 8 inch version. Also I realized too late I should have purchased white ones for this installation on a white ceiling, so I returned one of them for the 8 inch version in white, and once I saw how that looked and worked I replaced the other as well. It came supplied with a translucent silicon gasket in a bag labelled “outdoor installation only” but the video that accompanies this product at Amazon said to use it in all “wet” installations and over the shower I installed it. YES it was HARD to get it to fit the edge of the light, much more difficult with the small light, and much easier with the large one. Suggest you put it in some very warm water and stretch it out then put it on while warm. The edge of the housing is thin and fit into the slit in the ring and I was able to put it on then handled the housing very gently until I could fix it in place. I noted a lot of complaints about the spacing of the holes not being at 3” and that's true for the 5.5 inch version but the 8 inch version had that spacing. And the new octagonal plastic “old work” junction boxes had a set at 2.75” and another 3” hole set. Those are the correct hole spacing to match the 5.5 and 8 inch lights respectively. For those who need something else (and perhaps the largest light), the box also included a standard light adapter bracket (in a bag labelled “Universal Bracket Adaptor”) for a j-box which would have allowed mounting regardless of the hole spacing on the housing. Not needed for me. YMMV. The video showed a set of short and a set of longer screws, and I only got two sets of the same long screws with the 5.5 inch and that was a bit of a problem as the screws were just a little too long and bottomed out in the boxes without tightening correctly; I was able to find some shorter screws for this installation. In the 8 inch fixture though the hardware supplied was two longer screws and two shorter ones and installation was simple. They are VERY attractive installed, the silicon ring is barely visible and only if you are looking for it and they offer a very modern almost recessed look to them, just what I was hoping for. Fortunately I didn't listen to the video which said the lens comes off with a CLOCKWISE turn; the paper instructions are essentially silent and useless. The lens comes off COUNTER-clockwise. Well maybe it does, I had to spray WD-40 along the rim of the lens on one of the small ones to get it to turn, the other came off but not easily. On the 8 inch versions I was able to get more palm contact and the lens was easily turned. However I don't see much likelihood I'll need to do it often so... there is a thin gray foam ring inside the casing that has no apparent usage, it doesn't quite fill the space between the LED compartment and the outer casing, and wouldn't provide much in the way of thermal isolation. On the other hand I don't see this generating much heat so I don't see any need for it. You should note that it appears that no matter what size you buy you get the same lumen output. It's quite adequate though. I counted 34 individual LEDs which means if you have a few failures over time you aren't likely to notice. I noted that some complaints about 60Hz flicker on dimming, have not seen that so far. Perhaps my eyes are not very sensitive to that.
