for welding the P100/2097 filter is standard are these better? I get throat irritation & coldlike symptoms after welding old steel, galvanized fumes

yes they are. but as other say, the best thing is to get some sort of fume extraction going. I built one for less than 100 dollars that pulls 800cfm. if you are getting symptoms use amazon to find the bits you need to make a good cheap system to protect yourself . the growing weed industry means there are lots of functional cheaper fans available and lots of flexible ducting. i got a fan, and 25' of ducting for about 70 bucks, throw in screws, clips ,vent covers and you are done under $100.... got all of it on amazon... (garage welding )

Is there a shelf life to this filter? I intend to buy more and use what's been left.

Im sure there is but I dont know it...it last longer 2 or 3x as long as pink 2097 filters..I was using it in weld shop with weld fumes . Grinding particles. And spray paint fumes..I had very clean breathable air. With hardly any sneezing

how do you know when it's time for a new filter?

I really couldn't tell you, I am still on my first set of these and after absorbing probably 25 hours of welding fumes I can breathe through them almost as good as new. Only difference is they are really brown looking. They still work fine and can't smell any smoke or odors through them. And the fibers inside the center when you take them off the mask is still pure white so nothing is getting through. I looked as I was afraid they had a hole somewhere, I couldn't believe they lasted this long. They are pretty beat up and floppy too and still filter perfectly. Truly marvelous filters!
