Product Description David Duchovny (The X Files) returns to our screens in the hilariously dark new comedy series, Californication. Bachelor Hank Moody (Duchovny) has almost got it made: he's a sexy, best-selling author, but his insatiable appetite for beautiful women often lands him in hot water. Every day, Hank finds himself in bed with another woman and two steps back from his ultimate goal – restoring his family. He wouldn’t mind reviving his writing career either, but as a part-time dad juggling his wild LA lifestyle with grown-up responsibilities, this "devil may care" writer is at a loss for words. From the very first episode, Hank sets the tone for the whole series. We meet him first in a church asking Jesus to help him get his life back on track, but he gets distracted by a hot nun, which turns out to be a dream that is representative of his lifestyle – he then goes on to have sex with a woman who is cheating on her enraged husband and a 16 year-old girl who he thinks is in college. This clever comedy also stars Natascha McElhone (Solaris) as Hank's ex-girlfriend, Madeleine Martin as Becca, his wise-beyond-her-years 12 year-old daughter and Evan Handler (Sex And The City)as Charlie, Hank's best friend and agent. From .co.uk Some people go all through their career without managing to land even one memorable role. Thanks to Californication, David Duchovny has now chalked up two. Yet Hank Moody is as far removed from The X-Files’ Fox Mulder as you can pretty much get. That’s because Moody is a successful author, only one with a real eye for the opposite sex. He’s a man caught in the midst of a troubled life, on one hand a father, on the other dabbling with the odd drink (to put it mildly). And it’s the complexity of the character that Duchovny clearly has a ball with, lifting Californication into must-see territory in the process. A real show out of nowhere, Californication though has so much more going for it. The scripts veer between very funny moments and areas that other shows wouldn’t go anywhere near, while the supporting cast do ably up their game to keep up with the leading man. The full first season of Californication is presented here, and it’s fair to say it leaves you salivating for more. An individual, entertaining and very funny show, this is one of those occasions where the hype surrounding a programme is there to be believed. Don’t miss it. --Jon Foster P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); From the Back Cover Subtitles: English, English for the Hearing Impaired. So so...
I got bored very quickly with this. The sex farce is initially funny but soon gets a bit dull. I mean you can't really care about a guy who picks up his daughter from school after getting through his eighth prositute, smelling of p**** yet again. Or his incredibly, incredibly, forgiving ex-wife. This and the fact everybody is so incredibly rich it leaves you rather detached from the characters and not rooting for anybody.

Not So Much
I was looking for something that was a good as Weeds. Sadly, this wasn't it. Weeds managed to somehow put dark, funny and likeable all into the one show, but this seemed to me to be more cynical. Maybe I can't get the Mulder & Scully connection out of my head ;-). It was OK, but I doubt that I'll be buying any more seasons unless I find myself very bored with a lot of money to spend.

"I love women, I have all there albums"
Have you seen those adverts for California? "A lot of people have misconceptions about California... ner, ner, ner, ner ...come to California." Don't you chuffing hate `em?If the answer is yes you may sympathise with Hank Moody (David Duchovny) the main protagonist of Californication.Hank- Idealistic, disenfranchised, New York Novelist, is struggling with writers block after being dragged to L.A. for an artistically worthless movie option on his book, his struggles have been galvanised into a true crisis of faith, through having been left by his long term partner, the fragrant Karen (Natascha McElhone ). Who is now co-habiting (with their daughter) with a reliable, high status, dull-ard.Hank reacts to this crisis by releasing his raging id and indulging in all the artistic and L.A.-centric clichés of excess which his cult fame allows, to various funny, gross, and awkward results. His one true source of well being is his 13 year old daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin) who can roughly be described as Hanks common sense ego reminding him of his truly important role as father, as he try's to "win back" her mother Karen. Karen in turn represents a romanticised view of Hanks past life, his creativity and an idealisation of Love its-self.You could describe Californication as "Sex and the City for men", but you would be wrong, in many ways it is it's opposite, Hank hates the city he lives in, he doesn't strive to find the perfect partner but longs to reconcile his past romantic life, his crisis seem more urgent, comic, and libidinous, and some how more honest. All the performances are spot on and at half hour each the episodes are a brilliantly structured, breeze of laughs and heart string tugging, presenting some worthwhile meditations on life, love and creativity. I found it completely non-salacious and just kind of real, really. The tightness of Tom Kapinos' writing makes any sentimentality utterly forgivable, as the negativity is as focused as the romanticism and the two easily sit side by side as forms of idealism.I sat down and accidentally ended up watching the entire six episodes of disc one, which I never normally do. The ending has been deemed a cop out by some, but makes sense the more you think about it, Hank has to change and defy expectation because the ones you love always make it bloody hard work.

Californication = Awesome
Have no fears - if you like a strong, witty, sexy comedy then this is for you. Californication is like a grown up version of The OC, focussing on the disfunctional life of Hank Moody (Duchovney) and how he copes with the break-up of his relationship. Whilst all this doesn't sound all that much like a comedy, it is conducted to the back-drop of his near addiction to alcohol and women, and the even more disfunctional city of LA and all the people in it - for a man with little to lose Hank is now intent on living life to the full and caring about the consequences second, all of which makes for a hilarious view on the man's life. Interestingly the show is surprisingly moral in places, especially around Hank's relationship with his estranged daughter, and this gives Californication something of a soul and stops it from being simply gratuitous in it's portrayal of Hank's roller-coaster life.Without generalising I'd say men would probably like this more than women, but as mentioned the strong character relationships stop this from simplying being male fantsy and turn it into a credible, watchable series.I give series 1 of Californication 9.5/10. Watch it!

Sex and the City
Two meanings for tripe : food or nonsense. This is nonsense. Women got 'Sex and the City'; men got 'Californaication'. This is softcore porn with an average story backed up with a big budget. Its about a writer in California who has an addiction to women, smoking and drinking.

Great
This is such a great and underrated series, I love it. Comedy, drama, great characters, emotion...It's got it all. Well written and well acted. Great cast too. Shame someone has 'borrowed' this and never returned it.

A must see set of sometimes quite hilarious 'sexual escapades'.
Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of these, all taken with a pinch of salt as after all, this is a TV series, not a real life.

From X file to X rated....
Great! Really enjoying this - although sometimes it seems like David Duchovny has scripted this based on his past fantasies/wet dreams - it does make for entertaining viewing on how someone can just let it all go and sod the consequences. Luckily for him he manages to pick up all the babes even when looking and acting like a slob(ish). Natasha McElhone (as his ex-partner) is a joy to watch - cool and languid and the script is full of wit and a great way to pass an evening. Time to order series 2 I think.

Was macht diese Serie so gut?
