Seek Thermal Compact XR Extended Range High Resolution Thermal Imaging Camera with Micro USB Connector and Protective Waterproof Case for Android Devices, Black

Had to return the Seek Thermal Compact XR (Android version). Frequent screen freezes which could only be resolved by unplugging and reconnecting the camera, only for it to happen again after 20-30 seconds of use. I don't know if the problem is with the app or the camera itself (or my Moto G6 Play phone) but it was very disappointing for me. On the other hand the Amazon return procedure via UPS was absolutely brilliant and I had my refund within 24 hours so five stars for that!

The Seek Compact thermal cameras (XR and non-XR) have a true thermal sensor resolution of 206 x 156 pixels, and are remarkably cheaper than other thermal cameras with a similar resolution. I have never used any other thermal camera, but I have read comments by people who do also have other thermal cameras, who observe that the Seek image has more noise. I guess you would expect something to be better if you paid three times the price, so I didn't deduct any stars for the noise. I have attached a couple of images (a person and my UPS) showing what the camera can do. Note that I probably didn't get the focus quite right; I found it surprisingly difficult to tell exactly how well I had focused.You can't tell by looking at these images, but in fact the temperatures reported are out by 6°C. Under other circumstances (after briefly reviewing a recorded and image and then returning to measuring) my camera reported temperatures as much as 8°C below reality at room temperature. The image also became very noisy and developed a halo effect. Seek specify that between 0°C and 100°C the camera should be accurate to within ±5°C once it has warmed up, so my unit was clearly defective, and I ended up returning it (a process which Amazon made very painless). I have based my "star" rating ignoring the numbers reported, and ignoring the strange state my camera entered after a warm restart to measuring.In case it helps anyone else who happens to receive a defective camera, I have included some images showing the problems I experienced. Firstly, after spending a few seconds in the gallery and then returning to measuring, and looking at a surface of uniform temperature, I got an extraordinarily noisy image with a halo. After a few minutes this settled down to a somewhat noisy halo with marked vertical stripes. The final image shows a cup of warm water that was sitting on a floor of uniform temperature. As you can see, these last three images are nowhere close to the quality of first two.My main criticism (and the reason I deducted one star) would have to be the app. It does not allow the user to apply any calibration, so even if you know the temperate of something in the image you can't force the camera to report it correctly. It can report the temperature at the center of the image, or the highest and lowest temperatures in the image, but if you are interested in more than one point that is not an extreme then you are out of luck. You also cannot specify the range of temperatures or even lock the range so that you can get multiple images with the same temperature scale: the scale always automatically adjusts to the highest and lowest temperatures visible. If you just want to locate a hot spot the app is fine, but if you want images for use in writing up a report it is a bit limited.For the record I have discussed my problems with other owners of Seek Compact cameras (XR and non-XR) and some of them have reported that they are getting accurate temperatures and an almost immediate return to good images after resuming measuring. I presume defective units like mine are rare, and I would have been very happy with it if I had always been able to get images like the first two and if the reported temperatures had been close to accurate.

excellent producti use this with a samsung s6 phone. it takes a little practice to get the focus right but this camera works very well. This was purchased for use with out VFD for search and rescue and hot spot detection. while not as good as a dedicated flir or bullard thermal unit this unit is certainly perfectly functional for our needs in detecting hot spots or spotting heat signatures outdoors.i bought the XR version as i wanted to use te camera outdoors for game spotting as well. I am easily able to spot dogs in a filed or treeline at 300 yards. i have no doubt it would work much further. beyond about 200 yards i can't identify "what" is moving but i can most certainly "see" it.indoors at room distances this camera is still very functional. While it does have a narrow FOV due to the magnification it still works very well at identifying hot spots. i have used it effectively at distance around 6-8' from the target. closer than that it still works fine you just have to spend more time searching with the camera movement.the only negative i have found is the XR seems to be a bit more sensitive to ambient temps than the standard camera. i put this next to a friends standard unit. during the day with ambient air temps in the 90's his camera did have a slightly better detectable image of a man sized target at 50 yards. i suspect this is again due to the extra magnification on the XR's lens focusing the heat. it wasn't enough to hide a target from view but it was a perceptible difference.after using this camera for a bit i am very happy with it. i don;t think you can go wrong with either model. if your main use is indoors or working inside 1-200 yards the standard camera is great as well.excellent product

For the price you can't beat this camera. At work we use a Fluke TiR32 and this uses similar technology to the Flir One where it overlays a real picture with the thermal image and the thermal resolution is 320X240 and cost $8k. The new Seek compact pro which will be release soon is going to have the same resolution at $500. This camera has 206X156 resolution which is really good for under $300. I debated between this one and the Flir One and went with this one due to the increased resolution, I want the resolution because I will be using this at night so the normal camera will not give any benefit. I am using this with the Inteliscope app as well and will try shooting with it here in another month or so. The XR model is really hard to use closer than 5ft but it is possible. The focusing is very touchy and you have to consider that there is a slight lag between the picture and current viewing. I am going to be using tomorrow at work to compare it side by side to the fluke while we remove a lock nut on a jet engine that we heat up in order to remove it.I attached a few photos and a video but would definitely recommend if you want to spot things at night at a decent distance and just to have a little fun with. I also tested the accuracy of the temperature by looking at a blender bottle full of cold drink and it was reading 66°F and then I took an IR handheld thermometer and it read 67°F which is very close since the temperature outside and while i did all tests and pictures is 98°F here in Kansas.The truck was about 25 yards away. Also It does come with a waterproof case!
