Very lightweight cloth. You wouldn't want to be opening and closing them, the magnets aren't strong enough to withstand movement. I hang a small kitchen towel and it is fine if I don't pull.

What is the clearance between the back of the rod and the door?

Unfortunately I'm not at home to measure, but I would say the magnet holds the rod about 1 inch away from the door, giving you a fair amount of space for curtains.

Are you supposed to remove both the paper and plastic backing for a non-slip magnetic surface?

I did. I didn't think the magnets would be strong enough for any barriers between the rod and the door.
