More fun than waxing!
I have not seen the original film, but this is not a remake of the Vincent Price movie, similar to the recent House on hauted hill film also done by Dark castle is not a straight remake. This is very much a modern day teen horror and is one of the best I have seen of the gerne and I have seen quite a few!Very similar in some ways to Wrong turn, a group of young friends head of for a road trip to a football game and take a shortcut of the beaten road. After camping overnight one of the cars needs a repair. So off they go into the local town where they could become the next main attraction!House of wax has some good young actors, especially Elisha Cutbert and Paris Hilton in the eye candy role. Good special effects you barely notice as they blend in rather well. Some grusome and original death scenes! For a 15 this does have some gory moments, similar to other Dark Castle productions I noticed. Overall a very good, original horror featuring a strong cast, a bit slow to start but once things start to go wrong for the group the action doesn't let up. Horror fans espescially will want this in their collection! It has plenty of extras too, a fun commentary by the 4 main actors as they view footage from production and out-takes. A very unique extra as they laugh and joke looking back to the time of filming and nearly 30 minutes long! There is a 10min feature on the production design of the House of wax and the town set. A 8min feature on the special effects used. Also 1 deleted scene, short gag reel and a trailer. A well put together DVD with some fun extras and a great film! 8/10

Surprisingly good...
At first, things didn't look good for this film. A cliche group of teens, all of which are annoying in acting and character, embark on a road trip. However, a car gets damaged along the way, and they go in search of the nearest town. It's a slow buildup, with the town not appearing in the movie until nearly the halfway point, even though that's where all the action takes place. But when the action starts, House of Wax takes on a nearly 70s splatter film type genre, which was totally unexpected.Sure, it's not very scary, and at times it cuts away at the gore just at it's worse, when a splatter film would have shown it, but in feeling, House of Wax does invoke that genre. And does it quite well. You're never quite sure who will die next, or die at all, and the gruesome deaths and mutilations can be quite can't-look-at-the-screen. Which makes it a shame that in order to plump a lower certificate, the film-makers decided not to show the gory details full on.Still, the characters remain annoying, but a decent finale, with excellent special effects (minus a few iffy shots)and some decent plot twists towards the end, make this film rather surprisingly enjoyable.Extras wise we get the usual guff making ofs, unfunny out takes and interviews. But what was an innovative extra was a split screen showing the main cast and some behind the scenes footage, with them talking about it. It's a good idea, but not implemented well, because all the cast do is go "oh, i remember that" or laugh for ages. So a decent extra idea that didn't quite work out.

Impressive
I've noticed a new trend in the newest horror movies lately where things seem to have gone back to nothing gorey happening until half way through the movie, like they did 20 or 30 years ago. It is like this in House of Wax. I'm not sure whether I like this new development or not but it works with House of Wax.It starts off with a theme that many other horrors movies have used; a group of teenaged friends have car trouble in the middle of nowhere, half of the friends stay at the car and the other half go to a nearby "deserted" town in search of help. This is a slasher movie that kills the charactors in origional ways, sometimes involving wax and I was impressed with how gorey this movie was for a fifteen.Impressive slasher movie with plenty of gore and a good ending. And, come on, who doesnt love it when Paris Hilton gets killed? :P.

Gruesome and scary: House of Wax is awesome!
What do people want in a scary movie? A bit of gore, tense moments, a scary psycho? If that's want you want in a horror movie, House of Wax fits the bill perfectly. If you ignore the acting skills of some of the young victims(hmmm...Paris Hilton)you are slowly introduced to the simple story. Teen-agers on a trip, car gets sabotaged, find nearest town, look in the macabre 'House of Wax', get killed off one by one. House of Wax is so entertaining. It has horrible murders and gruesome incidents that get you hooked from the word go. There are also some really exciting chases through the derelict town and after all the murders and chases you come to the end where the movie leaves you on a deadly cliff-hanger that makes you want to watch it again and again. Brilliant!
