It can. It comes with a usb cord that can be connected or disconnected. When connected the mouse plays with a wired connection.

When using it as a wired mouse, does it hurt the performance vs wireless?

The answer here from andres is actually partially incorrect. The mouse DOES in fact switch from wireless to wired when you plug it in. It's simple to test this as you can plug the mouse in with the wire and not have the wireless receiver connected. As far as performance goes he is correct. There is no perceivable difference.

Does anyone else have the black plastic on the bottom flaking off? Not sure if it's paint or plastic, but now I have lots of white on the bottom.

yes, Iv had my 905 about 6 years and it has lost some of the black under coating only around the switch area. it is normal wear and tear from sliding the mouse around so much. so don't worrie

What is the max wireless range on this mouse?

I was able to manipulate a web page using the scroll wheel at over 20 feet. Of course at that distance I could not see the mouse but when I clicked it it did respond and opened linked pages. I used the MSN homepage to scroll and click.
