Is this pillow sprayed or dipped in any flame retardants?

I do not believe so. I went with the face value of the organic label. I have twin granddaughters and they were happy. Best of all their Mom who is very cautious about everything was pleased!

Do you have to wash it to make the pillows fluffy?

Mine actually got too fluffy after washing and drying. My toddler can no longer use them. I will try flattening them out somehow.

I'm looking for a small 'hugging' pillow, after back surgery. Will these work or are they too soft?

I know what you mean, these are definitely not it. They are very flat so there would be nothing to work with in terms of trying to squish it up.. Good luck with your surgery!
