Is this a soft rubber/silicon material opposed to a fairly firm plastic? I bought a very similar looking item that's too rigid to work effectively.

The outside is hard plastic, the inside is soft silicone

is it suitable for left handed people?

Absolutely! I am left handed and this is a brilliant jar opener, I love using it. It is suitable for both left and right handed people. I use it every day. So far (and I have had it for months) there has only been one jar I could not use it on. I use the smallest size to open bottles of water. The larger sizes do marmalades and jams etc and many other things. I am so glad I bought this item.
