With twenty-two chapters written by leading international experts, this volume represents the most detailed and comprehensive Handbook on electricity markets ever published. It covers all dimensions of electricity markets: wholesale and retail; renewable electricity sources; the electrification of mobility, heating and cooling; and recent innovations such as distributed generation, electrical energy storage, demand response and digital platforms that are disrupting the industry. The benefits, as well as the limits, of open markets and competition are assessed at the level of underlying principles and with reference to specific cases, including the UK, PJM Interconnection, Texas, Australia, Scandinavia, continental Europe and China. The details of electricity market designs are analysed and discussed. The book also considers new emerging business models, as well as the impact of electricity sector policy priorities such as universal access and deep decarbonization. This Handbook is intended to be used and useful. Students and young professionals will find the information they need to enter the field. Researchers, experienced professionals and public decision-makers will get a comprehensive update on the topical issues in electricity markets that will guide them through the important developments the sector is witnessing. Review: Expensive, but this is the new power market bible - Picture of the appendix and 2 pages to get an idea of what you are getting into. As someone interacting with renewables, storage and fossil generation on a macro and micro basis daily, this book is worth every penny. It's expensive, but there is nothing that even comes close to explaining traditional power market theory, the difference between types of markets, and new technology implications all tied together and with examples from as recent as 2020. For anyone aspiring to get into electricity, I suggest buying and reading this and rereading it. And then asking people questions about the parts you find interesting. Right now. This will beat almost any course in college if you want to get INTO the industry. For anyone in electricity, I suggest buying it and using the appendix to seek out simple explanations on topics that might be too complex for you. Had the book a weird an paraphrased several paragraphs to explain concepts I've been using 2000 words to explain. Then you go to the footnotes of that section for even MORE detailed papers that are useful beyond even mid career professionals. The book is an incredible comprehensive resource on almost every electricity market and operations. It's up to date with the old regime, middle of the energy transition (now) and some forward discussions. I'm very glad this was written. It's neither too 'pie in the sky' renewables or too 'pessimistic' there's no way this could work. It simple explains how things works (market theory) and discusses the challenges with that, from many peoples (load, generators, ISOs) perspectives Kudos to the authors. I have never considered a textbook over $100 worth the money, but this one is, 5/5. I just wish I could have gotten a signed copy Review: Great Reference on Power Markets - The collection of readings in the book provides a great foundation on how electricity markets have evolved through the years and prevents the practitioner from wasting time on rehashing ideas that have been examined before.
