Cutting edge of mediocre
I opted to try the Altec Lansing VS2620 based on the price, and the number of favourable reviews they seemed to have - both here and at other outlets on the internet. When they arrived my first reaction was that they looked a bit cheap and not so cheerful. They did indeed connect to my PC without any fuss, but the sound quality they produce is very mediocre. The bass response is very woolly and totally lacks depth, but you do get a tone control which helps slightly. My PC has a Xonar DS sound card, so the audio output is of a good standard - and sounds great on the old Labtec speakers I hoped to replace.Anyway I did persevere and trial them for a few days - but they just aren't capable of delivering a decent sound. I am a musician, so that may well make me slighty more picky when it comes to sound quality - but I am not an audiophile who wants only perfection.Another big draw back with these speakers is that they don't have a headphones facility. They do have an "auxiliary input" - but there is no mention of its use in the sparse booklet that accompanies the speakers. Its certainly no use for headphones.I suppose if all you want is music quality comparable with that of an average cheap radio then these will be okay for you, but if you want good audio quality these will be a disappointment.

great sounding big old speakers
I recently got these speakers to replace an older creative set up that although still working perfectly is now taking up too much room in my set up and i now have to make room for these. They are a lot bigger than i thought. I read most of the reviews on here including the negative ones ( I don't understand how they think that they are poor in terms of sound quality. I only turned mine up less than half and could feel the bass thumping through the desk. They maybe got a bad pair or need some cotton buds to clear their ears out i think.)The only problem is the lack of a earphone socket but i worked my way around that so it's not a problem. So to sum up decent sounding speakers for a decent price. the star is knocked off the rating for the bulky size and lack of an earphone socket.

Excellent choice of speaker
I bought these speakers on the recommendation of others who had purchased them, and from the moment of plugging them into my laptop, I have had no regrets. I wasn't looking for volume, although they are quite loud enough for a medium sized lounge, but quality, and these speakers have sound quality in spades. Crisp, clear sound with enough bass to give the music depth even at maximum volume. Would recommend these speakers wholeheartedely.

Sound-tastic :D
The sound is very very clear even at the highest volume, you don't get that in most of the new speakers these days. I needed 2 more extra stereo speakers to join with my 5.1 sound system, needed abit more sound, thought it would make a different and it absolutely did! Love the speakers. Recommend to anyone who wants it to watch movies, music, anything really. Very happy with this purchase :)

Not recommended
I had high expectations after reading the reviews on Amazon and only bought them because the reviews were so good. I think I've been duped by fake or paid reviewers because these speakers are terrible. They take up far too much space and offer no more than very "tinny" sound. Music, games and speech all sound awful through them and no amount of adjusting makes any difference. Don't ever turn them up because all you will get is distorted noise.I recommend spending your money on a decent set of pc speakers and forget these unless you are absolutely desperate for any sound no matter the quality and even then only buy them if they are on sale at a very low price. I will stay away from Altec Lansing products in the future. My pair will be donated to either the local recycling place or a charity shop, or for hammer practice once I have a replacement. Very disappointing.

Sound is decent, but failed after 7 months
Initially works great, decent sound, good for valuebut after 4 months of use, the right speaker start failing (there was no accident like falling off or something). It simply stops working unless I give it a tap, I guess its because of the poor build quality inside that some connection must be loose. But there's no way to open it and fix that, after 7 months the whole systems died :(, think I won't be bother buying cheap speakers in the future

Decent sound, very good value
Pro:Sound is full, volume is decent, they feel solid. All controls are at desktop level (as opposed to subwoofer positioned)The auxiliary input is useful for using say alternatively an Xbox and PC.I have twin 22" screens and the cabling is long enough to accomodate this.Con:These speakers are, for desk top use, comparatively large and the shape is space wasting. If you have the space, these are good speakers for the price.

Fantastic sound!
These Altec Lansing VS2620 speakers are superb. Better than my much more expensive hi-fi. Easy to set up and a pleasure to listen to. Extremely powerful - only need them on low and still have a fabulous tone. Thank you Amazon!
