Product Description In one of Hollywood's best films, an out-of-work screenwriter attaches himself to a tragically deluded screen star attempting a come back. The winner of 3 Academy Awards including Best Screenplay. desertcart.co.uk Review More than half a century after its release in 1950, Sunset Boulevard is still the most pungently unflattering portrait of Hollywood ever committed to celluloid. Billy Wilder, unequalled at combining a literate, sulphurous script with taut direction, hits his target relentlessly. The humour--and the film is rich in this, Wilder's most abundant commodity--is black indeed. Sunset Boulevard is viciously and endlessly clever. William Holden's opportunistic scriptwriter Joe Gillis, whose sellout proves fatal, is from the top drawer of film noir. Gloria Swanson's monstrously deluded Norma Desmond, the benchmark for washed-up divas, transcends parody. And her literal descent down the staircase to madness is one of the all-time great silver-screen moments. Sunset Boulevard isn't without pathos, most notably in Erich von Stroheim's protective butler who wants only to shield his mistress from the stark truths that are massing against her. But its view of human beings at work in a ruthlessly cannibalistic industry is bleak indeed. Nobody, not even Nancy Olson's sparkily ambitious writer Betty Schaefer, is untainted. And neither are we, "those wonderful people out there in the dark". Norma might be ready for her close-up, but it's really Hollywood that's in the frame. No wonder Wilder incurred the charge of treachery from his peers. It's cinematic perfection. On the DVD: Sunset Boulevard lends itself effortlessly to a collector's edition of this quality. The film itself is presented in full-frame aspect ratio from an excellent print and the quality of the mono soundtrack is faultless: the silver screen comes to life in your living room. The extras are superb, including a commentary from film historian Ed Sikov and a making-of documentary which includes the memories of Nancy Olson. Interactive features such as the Hollywood location map add to the fun. --Piers Ford Review: Hollywood Gothic at its finest - Such a great movie, one of the two great exemplars of Hollywood Gothic. Wonderful allusions to the great classic silents throughout, and great performances and cinematography throughout. Great economy of plot. Review: Timeless classic - It’s truly difficult to believe this film is some 75 years old. It’s a timeless classic and I find something new every time I watch it…and there are few films I watch more than two or three times. Wilder was such an accomplished director. He was exacting and had every scene mapped exactly the way he wanted it portrayed. His use of light is fascinating and the theme of light and dark, good and bad, old and new is one which runs right through the film. It’s a stark comment on the Hollywood film industry. It’s one of contrasts; opulent and seedy, fame and isolation, reality and surrealism. It’s truly compelling from start to finish. Swanson and Von Stroheim deliver superb performances which almost parody their situation in life. This was a comeback film for Swanson, the former star of the silent screen and Von Stroheim now a butler rather than a film director. All of this is wrapped up in a clever story of control and lust. Holden’s character narrates events following a dramatic opening scene where he’s found floating face down in a swimming pool. His voice from beyond the grave is chilling and compelling. Simply brilliant.

A huge missed opportunity to celebrate one of the greatest films ever made!
The Sunset Boulevard 75th Anniversary Limited Edition box set just arrived. On first glance, it’s gorgeous with a meticulous 4K restoration, uncompressed mono soundtrack, glossy rigid slipcase, high quality photos, and a picture booklet. But all I could think was… did Paramount really put any thought into this release? They’ve included a picture booklet and yet another set of loose photos in a separate pack. Why not just combine them into one proper booklet? Then there are not one, but two posters (seriously, two?) and a mock street sign for Sunset Boulevard, all stuffed into an extra envelope just to bulk up the box. Lovely? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely not. Imagine instead if they’d produced a rigid hardback photo book packed with all those images plus extensive essays on the film’s production, cast, and legacy, with re-evaluations from critics past and present. Something that truly reflects the film’s impact at its 1950 release and its lasting significance three quarters of a century later. One bonus poster? Fine. Two? Why? And the Sunset Boulevard street sign? Well, I live in London, so I doubt the council will let me rename my street, no matter how much I’d like to. All in all, it’s a pretty underwhelming tribute to one of the greatest films ever made. Here’s hoping they get it right for the 100th anniversary. Still 5 stars to the film and immaculate 4k presentation, mixed feelings about the presentation.

A Great Film but not for me
I can see the quality in the film making - the production values are high, the direction excellent, the script strong and the acting good. However, the film just didn't engage me. I felt the story wasn't strong enough. The cast were good and I can see that it is an fine film. It just wasn't for me.

Rightly seen as a classic
I had bought this DVD some time ago but only watched it recently. What a treat it is as the movie certainly lives up to its billing as a classic. Though made in 1950 the movie is years ahead of its time as director Billy Wilder looks at the very dark side of Hollywood. William Holden plays a down at heel Hollywood scriptwriter who accidentally becomes first the script editor and later a lot more for a reclusive silent movie star, Norma Desmond, played by Gloria Swanson. Due to his dire financial straits he is unable to escape fro her clutches and, despite himself, he starts to tolerate the bizarre life he has made for himself. However a chance meeting with a young female scriptwriter reawakens his love of writing and makes him realise what he has become. However Desmond will not let him leave her life easily. The script was co-written by Wilder and is full of black humour and has some great lines. The voiceover by Holden is occasionally annoying, as it tends to say aloud what the viewer can see on screen anyway. The acting is brilliant. Holden and Swanson make a great couple, in a peculiar way. Swanson's silent movie acting style is perfect for the deluded character of Desmond. The final scene as she descends the staircase of her mansion to face the cameras is unforgettable. Holden is very good as the brash self-confident writer who has gone as low as he can go. There are appearances from great directors Erich von Stroheim, as Desmond's faithful butler and Cecil B. De Mille, as himself. Von Stroheim is unexpectedly touching as the man who does the most to keep Desmonds fantasy alive. The extras are well worth watching, particularly the very informative making of feature.

What else ?!...

// And now Mr DeMille.. She is ready for her close-up. 🎥🎥🎥
