Ideal for small spaces
What do you do when you live in an apartment with no space for fullsize tools? You buy this thing! It's a mature design and none the worse for it. Very solid in the hand, surprisingly functional for something the size of a paperback, and feels tough enough to get the job done - unlike cheap tools, it's not a jiggly mass of clunking after a few hours' use. The bonus: many people think this tool isn't the same as models that lock the blade in different positions. Actually, it is! The blade locks out as a normal shovel, or at about 90 degrees from horizontal (actually about 95) as a pick, or with the blade folded back flat as a bludgeoning whacker thing. (Which probably has a better name, but SHOULD be "bludgeoning whacker thing".) What people miss: to lock the blade in position you need to position it first, then tighten the locking screw HARD ANTICLOCKWISE - it feels solid at least half a twist before it really locks the blade, so it's easy to think you've reached the limit before it actually locks. Rest assured, this tool does indeed have 3 positions, and does indeed lock the blade in place. Compact, hardwearing (at least on earth!) and with a saw edge unlike the cheaper Fiskar's version. That said, compare it to the Fiskar's if you get a chance; I've no idea if that cheaper tool is equally well made. But I'm happy with my Gerber's.

Built like a tank brilliant shovel !
Built like a tank ! Really I'm not joking iv put this thing through hell iv dug 3ft by 3ft holes in no time, I go metal detecting with this & lean on the handle almost every time 2 years on I'm still using it, & it still folds like it should, you do get abit of paint wear on the tip but this took time & is to be expected, thinking of buying one for my car.

You get what you pay for IMHO
Lets starts by stating this is an expensive item, especially when you compare it to the cheaper Gerber tool (20 Pounds) well why is that? Well it is far better made and is clearly designed with digging in mind. Parts are made in the US and Finland with the blade being Polish. All assembled in the USA, unlike the cheaper alternative, you know the metal is good and the components are strong and up to the job. It doesn't come with a sheath/pouch or what ever you want to call it, you just get the folding shovel, who needs a sheath anyway? It has too positions that the mechanism locks to by screwing the top part down, one is the shovel the other is slightly off 90 degrees and is designed for..well hacking like a big pick. The handle is strong and folds down nicely as well. It digs, and hacks what more do you want? You do get what you pay for, if you pay 20 pounds for a folding shovel don't expect it to last unless you dig in sand. The biggest failure on other models is the poor quality materials used in the bolts that hold the blade to the handle. No problem with this version. Its not that light weight, at just over 1Kg. Any complaints, IMHO it is over priced.

I never write reviews but this shovel worked so well I felt compelled to say something about it. I used this shovel to dig 225 feet of trench for a drainage system in my 30 inch crawlspace. The trench was 14 to 16 inches deep and 12 inches wide. I was on my knees or belly for most of the work. The shovel was perfect for the job. Once locked into position it stayed there-no constant resetting and retightening. It's light. It remained sharp throughout the work and in addition to digging I used it to hack out roots from nearby oak and camphor trees that had spread under the house. A great shovel and solidly made. If you need something like this is the one to buy. And, it folds up into a very small, manageable size and combined with its light weight it would work well for camping should you need it for that.
