Nearly forty years after its original publication, one of the most influential textbooks on modern pain management is available again for today’s generation, in a unique and enhanced edition. Now complemented by expert, chapter-by-chapter commentaries from leading authorities on psychologically-oriented pain management and pain-associated disability, Fordyce’s Behavioral Methods for Chronic Pain and Illness, an IASP publication, blends Dr. Fordyce’s pioneering behavioral concepts with modern research and clinical practice. This innovative title is ideal for clinicians and researchers involved in the multidisciplinary assessment, treatment, and management of pain and pain-associated disorders, as well as anyone interested in behavioral approaches to chronic pain and illness. Throughout his long and illustrious career, Wilbert (Bill) Fordyce made major contributions to the health and well-being of those who suffered from chronic illnesses. As a clinical psychologist working in rehabilitation medicine, he put health psychology on the map for those who had chronic pain and began the cognitive/behavioral approach to pain management. Excelling in research, teaching, and patient care, he was a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and the American Pain Society (APS), lectured worldwide, and received numerous awards and honors in his field. His seminal book, Behavioral Methods for Chronic Pain and Illness , was originally published in 1976 and opened a new era in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain. This republication with contemporary commentaries is an indispensable resource for a biopsychosocial approach to the management of chronic pain. Review: A classic - and the updated commentary just makes it shine even more! - Fordyce's seminal work in pain management contributed towards the shift away from a purely biomedical/pharmaceutical/surgical approach to persistent pain, and added a dimension that involved the person, their family, the whole healthcare team - and was successful, if reducing disability (or the impact of pain) is your goal. This book clearly details the thoughts behind using a behavioural approach, it's accessible (ie not too complex to understand), and adds to a clinician's repertoire as well as augmenting an understanding of how some of the treatments we use in persistent pain management may help. Thoroughly worth getting on Kindle, but I've decided to splash out and get a hard copy to have and to hold... Review: A great book - A bridge between old behaviorism and the contemporary finding in this field in the commentaries of the maximum scientific exponent...i have know Fordyce theory now and i am surprised of the actuality and freshness of his ideas..The book is a bit too expensive, i understand the use of pregiate paper, colour etc, but from my view this is not necessary..
