At least a few pads. These are used by my sons to transport their homework book to and from school. If you want a huge quantity this may not be for you if you use it for transportation. I have a ring binder type which is better for transport and storage especially if you have the plastic sleeves. For the price it is great

can an A3 sketchbook fit inside?

I would think so - I have stored a pack of loose A3 paper which fits easily. It is a useful carry case and easily clips shut.
