Q: Is this jacket tough like a usual Carhart jacket that takes years to break in, or is this soft enough for a child to wear and enjoy?

It's a little stiff but not as bad as an adult Carhart & would recommend washing it to soften it up. I don't recommend putting them in a car seat with this on as it is very thick & bulky. I bought it for my 2 year old last year in a 3T size & it still fits great & is perfect for really cold weather or playing in the snow.

Q: What size do you recommend for an average 3 year old?

Always size up for carhartt. My son is in a size 6/7 and we bought him an 8. 8 will be too small next year and he’ll have to wear a 10/12. We’ve had to do this for every carhartt article we’ve ever bought him. Always size up.

Q: Is this jacket light enough for SoCal cooler nights/mornings? Need warmth in a light weight jacket for San Diego.

The Sherpa lining is pretty warm. This is more of a winter coat and might be a little too warm for this time of year.
