yes it makes sense and no it doesn't work for those kind

Q: Would this work on a Volvo penta 5.0 Gxi 200?3

It will not. It is only designed for the ECM Motors as specified - This Motor Tester is for use with only Genteq ECM 2.0, 2.3 and 3.0 series motors and cannot be used to test ECM motors supplied by other motor manufacturers. Not for use with Genteq X-13 motors.

Q: Does this work in commercial unit applications

If it's a 6 or 12 pin plug motor it will work.

Q: How does this work? Will it rerogram my computer or just tell me if there is anything wrong with it?

This tool sends it's own voltage to the motor. So if you plug it in and the motor doesn't start you've got a bad motor but if it does start then you've got a bad board
