This works great!
I held off on buying this because it seemed expensive, but I finally broke down and got the Lomi and am so glad I did! It makes compost efficiently, and there's no smell at all. I've thrown kitchen scraps like fruit skins, lettuce scraps, egg shells, and some expired (and buggy) pasta, and it reduced it all down to lovely compost in a surprisingly short time. It does have a sound, but it's not obnoxious or loud. Being able to get these scraps broken down quickly helps keep the kitchen smelling clean, and I'm able to use the compost in my garden immediately. So great!

Works as advertised
I find I'm using this more and more. What I'm doing with my scraps might be the difference between my use and that of other users. I don't put them in the machine right away. I stick them in a plate by my window so that the morning sun will dry the food out before its placed in the lomi. I started doing that after I opened the lid and saw that not everything had turned to dirt. Now it does. If you don't have the lid completely closed, you might notice a smell when you're using it. Be sure that the lid is tightly closed on all sides. Not closed on one and lifted ever so slightly on the other side. The other day I was cleaning my lomi, and there's a part that's removable (the part that spits out the dirt) that you can take apart and the dishwasher really cleans it up nicely. So I'd taken it part and put the two pieces of that particular part in the dishwasher. Unfortunately, during that cycle, the sealing gasket (which I'd forgotten to remove) came off so when I opened the dishwasher there were three pieces instead of two. I tried unsuccessfully to try getting it back together, and then called amazon to see if I could get a replacement part for that little gasket. Lomi didn't give them an option to replace that part, so they initiated a return and were going to send me a new one. After we got off the phone, I tried again to replace it and this time it worked! I've used it successfully twice since then. I have some gaskets on order now to take care of the issue if it ever arises again. ($5.99 for 6 gasket seals). So I cancelled the return. Thanks Amazon, you've been great thruout. Didn't want to have to return it!!! Footnote: I initiated another return and thankfully I was able to cancel that one as well. The reason for the initiation? When plugged in, the Lomi wouldn't start after I pushed the button. The button wouldn't even turn it on. The customer service never made any suggestions other than to return it. When I started to take it apart to put it in a box, I found that the cord that plugs into the wall, also plugs into the lomi. I'd forgotten about that. It had worked itself out of the lomi when I turned the lomi a little bit. After I plugged it back into the lomi, it worked! Again, saving the hassle of the return. The reason for my posting that bit of information is so that if your lomi doesn't work, you check both ends of the cord to see they're both plugged in.

Why did I wait so long??
My why: I work 60-70 hrs a week, meal prep my weeks, and have very little time to manually compost. But it always felt awful to just throw veggie scraps in the garbage so I started freezing the scraps. Well that became a more a chore because of the space I needed in my freezer . Fast forward: I couldnโt be more happy with this purchase. It is easy to setup and use immediately. So far Iโve produced 10 cups of beautiful compotes soil in less than 24 hrs of using it. My garbage imprint has reduced considerably. I did a lot of homework to search for a kitchen composter that fit my needs- this one checked all the boxes! Yes it is on higher end of price but it is well made, has so many resources online and easy to use.

Revised to four stars
Two and a half years later, and I'm still using this composter. Over time, I've learned various means of reducing the baked-on-compost problem. Hence, I revise my ranking to four stars. ********** Iโve been shopping on Amazon since 1995 and have purchased thousands of products over that time. I believe this is only the second negative review that Iโve ever submitted After careful research, I purchased a Lomi composter on December 12, 2022. The return window closed on January 31, 2023 (50 days later). This composter is a good idea and seems to be sturdily constructed. However, I think the parent company (Pela) put this item on the market before working out all of the kinks. There are a variety of problems with this product, only one of which will I describe here. When we received our Lomi composter, we read the instruction manual carefully and followed all of the included instructions. Initially, the composter worked as advertised, and we were very pleased. However, a few months after we began using our Lomi, we found that composted kitchen waste was baked onto the bottom of the bucket (see attached picture). This happens about once every three or four times we use the composter. Sometimes, this baked-on compost is thick enough that it jams the rotor. More often, the rotor will still turn. Sometimes, I can carefully remove the baked-on compost with a plastic tool (again, see the attached photo). Other times, I have to soak it out (thus, rehydrating what Iโve just paid to dehydrate); the consequent swelling can also jam the rotor. The only other person I know who has a Lomi composter has reported experiencing the same problem. I donโt know what causes this problem. However, Iโve noticed that after the light comes on to indicate that the Lomi is cooling, the light indicating that the Lomi is drying remains on. If the machine is supposed to be cooling but itโs still drying (hence, heating), maybe that could cause this problem. In any case, although I strongly support winter composting and, thus, conserving landfill space, I cannot in good conscience recommend this Lomi composter.

Lomi is good for composting but beware
I used the Lomi since March 2023. In October it quit working. It would no longer compost. I contacted Lomi telling them the bucket and grinder no longer functioned. I sent pictures and they refused to replace the bucket and grinder. However, after going back and forth with Lomi customer support three times, they FINALLY sent me a replacement bucket.

No more fruit flies!
This works exactly as advertised! I got it because no matter how food waste was handled we were getting infested with flies and their, uh, larval forms. I run this a couple of times a week and the resulting product is low volume, dry and has very little odor (and that odor doesn't smell like garbage or attract bugs). If you put it in your yard you will smell *something* when it rehydrates but it isn't offensive (I personally wouldn't use it in indoor houseplants, though, because you can't mix it in). If you don't garden you can just dispose of the "dirt" in your yard waste/ green bin. It takes several hours to process a load, so I find it's best if I run it before turning in at night. There are all sorts of valid ecological reasons to use this, but mostly I never wanted to see another maggot again and so far it is holding up its end of the bargain perfectly.

Broke after 3 months
We purchased this Christmas of 2023 and started using it after the New Year. It worked amazing at first. Yes, it's a little noisy but we ran it overnight. Worked like a charm.... the compost it made was astonishing. I raved about it to everyone. About 3 months later it just stopped working. My husband tried to troubleshoot it himself but ended up calling Lomi and spending an hour on the phone. Based on their recommendation he was to change out the filter. After that it worked great... for about a month. We went away for 2 wks and upon return it didn't work again. When you started it, it would run for a few minutes then shut off. We tried changing the filter again but that didn't fix the problem this time. With 2 busy kids and work I just don't have time to troubleshoot on the phone again for hours. Sadly it has sat on my counter ever since, taking up space. I should note we followed the directions perfectly. We didn't overfill it and only put in there what was recommended.

Don't waste your money
I read the instructions. I tried two different cycles a couple of times each. I only put vegetable waste with a little fruit it in, no dairy meat beans paper or anything else. I have a Ph.D. and I worked hard to make sure I was using it correctly. Other reviews mention the noise, I didn't find it off-putting. They mention that getting the lid on is tricky, it is but I managed to get the hang of it. It takes up a lot of space, I put it in the laundry room instead of the kitchen. I am confident I am operating it properly. I'm ashamed I believed the hype, this machine does not come close to living up to it. What it does is remove a lot of water (but not enough, the result is too soggy to store) from the vegetable peels, etc., cuts them up (also not enough, I still ran them through the food processor first after seeing my initial results) and it reduces the volume significantly. The result is warm, wet, stinky, compressed, and unpleasant food waste. It grew mold within 24 hours if I didn't throw it out right away. It attracted flies both before and after operation. I added some of the "compost" to a potted plant and the plant is now beset by fruit flies. Unfortunately I went on vacation and I passed the return window which in my view should be significantly longer for an expensive product you want people to be completely satisfied with so they don't write negative reviews. I'm stuck with an machine that I don't think I'll use because it seems more sanitary to simply throw out the vegetable waste. The idea is great, the execution is disappointing. Don't waste your money. I repeat, don't waste your money.

Great product!
This kitchen composter is a great way to reduce waste and make composting cleaner. It is a slightly large countertop appliance, but it has a very sleek and clean appearance. I really appreciate that it is white, that is rounded in shape and that the bucket is dishwasher safe. It works great, is easy to set up and use, and the end product is what it should be. It does make some noise when running, but itโs not any louder than running a dishwasher, and itโs not disruptive. I highly recommend this product.

Great product, bit smelly
Love it, compacts like 4 food bins worth in to less than mass of one. However it does take a long time. Also smells bad and canโt keep it in house. Ideal for garage. Avoid if indoors.

Totally worth the price
I've always loved composting or at least I've loved the concept. Tl;dr: Lomi is a quick and easy way to turn leftovers into soil amendment. I've even done a worm farm and loved the worm poop that made my garden bloom. Worm farms require a delicate balance and I can't compost everything as it would upset the worms. In the burbs I had a traditional composter which really became the local raccoon dining room. Got the spinning locking composter which works great until it's almost full and it is hard to spin and you still can't put everything in or you get stinky juice coming out. Even tried a bokashi bucket but fermented gunk is still gunky at the end. The municipal green bin always stunk to high heaven in summer and freezes solid in winter. Now I'm in the country without a green bin collection. The local skunks have dug and chewed their way into both composters and the dog has been sprayed once too often (aka once). So when I saw an ig post about Lomi I researched. I ended up buying on Amazon because of the quick delivery (post Christmas collection of compostable gunk was judging me). The first setting I tried was the long compost one. I was expecting loud annoyance but it was about the same as my dishwasher and quieter than my bread machine. About 18 hours later I did have something that looked like dirt and smelled like Christmas dinner. Next I tried the shorter eco setting and ended up with a lovely dry substance that felt like coconut coir but likely still has some nutritional value for my spring garden. It's my favourite setting. Now I empty the Lomi in the morning and place the bucket on the counter by the sink. I fill during the day and start it up after I've cleaned up the dinner plates. I always have a stock pot going which cooks almost all bones to mush so I can process them in the Lomi as well. Worth every penny!!

Great add to our kitchen
We use this in conjunction with our yard composter and love it. Nothing goes to waste anymore because this allows us to process proteins than can't go directly to the main compost bin.
