I have a Fluval 19L tank and enjoying it emmensly, how often do the carbon and other white filters need replacing?

HI Kerno Gypsy. Forget the carbon. It is only useful for removing chemicals or medicines you may have added if you had a problem. Other than that it is useless as a filter media. The makers know this but want you to keep buying it every month. Buy another bag of the white biological media and replace the carbon with it so that you have two bags working at the same time. As regards cleaning only clean one bag in your weekly or two weekly 25% water change using the old water you have taken out to clean one of the bags of the filter media then next time you do a water change use it to clean the other bag. As regards the large sponge just give that a quick squeeze in the dirty water. Never use clean tap water to clean filter media or sponge as this will kill the good bacteria your filter needs. Hope this helps.

Water height..... This may be a silly question, but how high should the water be? As every time I feed my fish the food floats down the holes before

Hi. The water height should be about  2.5 cm from top. I have this set up with about 10 small fish i find the food is nearly all eaten before it gets near the filter inlets. Try feeding smaller amounts as overfeeding will pollute thetank i find half the amount stated on the food packaging is plenty , fish will eat algea and forage in substrate  or you can even turn off filter whilst feeding. There really shouldn't be any odours etc with this tank.  Normally smells come from the bacteria and filter pads in the filter.  Have you changed your filter pads ?
