Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler - White 550g

The time had come that every home owner dreads... the outside needed painting !! Time had taken its toll, and along with the looks and tuts from the painter, the cost, whilst reasonable, was still quite pricey. Long story short I decided to do some of the preparatory work myself. I needed stuff... and along with an electric sander (purchased elsewhere), I bought palette knives and this wood filler. If you are reading this, you will already know there is a multitude of options out there when it comes to fillers. I chose this one for several reasons, but in part it was because Ronseal describe it as 'High Performance'. I'm a sucker for 'Heavy Duty', 'Professional', or 'High Performance' products. Once I had prepared the area, and replaced any small bits of wood, I mixed the first batch. Yes I did say mixed... I was hoping it would be ready mixed but that was not to be. The instructions say a golf ball of filler to a pea of hardener. This was pretty straight forward, and it mixed well. Be aware however that there is a strong chemical smell. I personally don't mind it, but it will fill your house for an hour or two if mixed indoors. The problem with mixing filler, where the instructions are 'visual'... is it is easy to get it wrong. I do not know if the proportions I used were perfect, it seemed ok to me... but what I do know is the filler started to harden within minutes. It was still workable for the amount I had prepared, but be aware. The filler was fully hardened within half an hour or so, and was capable of being sanded, which I did. The colour was a nice bright white, which was perfect for painting with the same colour. I was very pleased with the results, it sanded to a nice smooth finish. I didn't need to nail or screw into it, so can't comment on that aspect. I only used about two thirds of the can, but am confident that the remains will last for a while due to the fact it is not ready mixed. The number of rock hard tubes of filler I have thrown away would have paid for the painting, and bought me a drink to admire the job. All in all I like this product, and would definitely buy it again. Five Stars.

Worked well on external wood surface. You have to mix with the hardener supplied and use quickly before it dries. But sticks to surface well and easy to layer up. Dried well and withstood a lot of heavy rain before being able to paint over it

Good stuff just a bit pricey

It arrived on time and the best packing you could ask for. The product is extremely good but, you need to be careful how much you mix in one go and do not add to much hardener. If you add to much hardener the mixture will go grainy and once this happens you need to throw it away and start again. If you mix to much you will not be able to use it before it’s starts to harden.

Wow this is fantastic filler, drying time is fast saving a lot of time.

Not the easiest of products to work with - tin is awkward to get contents out and the only sensible place to mix with hardener is inside the lid. Yes it dries very hard and so far so good prior to rubbing down but I ended up in a right mess - use cheap throw away tools for applying filler and wear disposable gloves. It may have been simpler for me to buy a new door as I had quite a bit of wet rot and a couple of deep holes so needed 2 x tins - suppose it saved the cost of a door, fitting locks and hinges so all in all worth the money and effort. Time will tell.
