Will this fit a Ruger American 42 inch rifle and can it be used as a hasty sling for shooting?

It should fit if the rifle has the appropriate sling swivel studs (the Ruger American comes with them standard). The rifle I have mine on is 40", so it should easily fit a 42", we well. And, yes, it can be used as a hasty sling. You'll just have to adjust it a bit to get the proper length on the sling to do so.

How well does the sling stay on you shoulder without slipping off?

I’ve not had any issues with it slipping off my shoulder. I wear a carhartt as an outer layer. It has a significant amount of coarseness or texture to it. I feel that it is a very high quality sling and a bargain honestly!!

Is the sling length adjuster plastic or metal?

The adjuster is plastic and the swivels are steel.
