Very pleasant and mature writing
I was 14 years old when I saw on TV Pat Summerall make a 49 yard field goal in the driving snow with time running out to win a game against the Browns. I found the drama and the heroism of these guys who played with great intensity to be quite powerful. Young males need heroes and the NY Giants were mine. There were no show-offs, no egos, no product endorsements, self promotions, or compulsive interruptions of the game for advertising. I really enjoyed the Giants' run of 5 years with the same group of heroes playing on dirt in all kinds of weather. I found this book to be quite pleasant reading. There are no great revelations or inflammatory gossip or lugubrious statements about the historical or societal significance of this or that. I enjoyed reading the respectful and gentlemanly comments from the grown up men who played in the great games I saw on TV. They were giants and they were heroic men and I liked them.

Great story of a by gone era in NY Football Giants history
A great book for those interested in NY Giants history from the 50s and early 60s. This book talks about some of the legendary figures who wore a Giants uniform. For those looking to gain a better knowledge of that era this is a wonderful book. Helped educate me about an era when the Giants won one title 1956, but lost in the championship game 5 times. ( 1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963 )

Excellent history of a storied football team
The player/personnel background information was informative, but I most enjoyed to portions of the book that discussed the games and seasons.

Great Read
Jack has written a well structured very readable book that provides great insight into the 1950's NY Giants. Who they were! How they interacted with one another and their coaches especially the latter, probably the greatest coaching staff ever on one NFL team. I became a lifelong fan of the NY Giants during this period since I had close relatives living in Stamford within a couple of blocks of Andy Robustelli's home and near to his store. We played as kids in the same school yards and on the same streets as he had when our age. We also met with him at his store and occasionally met other members of the team all of whom treated us wonderfully well. We also frequented NYC and Yankee Stadium because we were Yankee fans as well. I was a great time to be alive and cheering for truly wonderful players and human beings.

Way Back When.....
I thought the book was very well written--it provided a lot of insight, for example, as to why they traded some of their star def. players.----those were bad moves. Can't understand why Sherman would do that, and the Mara family should never have allowed that to happen. Nonetheless, it brought back a lot of great memories for me as a great Giant fan, which I still am. I thought for sure they would beat the Bears--very sad day--I was only 12--and I do remember the other games, especially the Packers--Jack Cavanaugh did a fantastic job with this book--those guys were true "iron men." I wouldn't mind getting another book about the old NFL--Love those days---I was happy to see that he mentioned Lou Defilippo, who was our high school coach in Derby,Ct.from 1968-1982. He coached Derby to a couple of state championchips and a few undefeated seasons--great coach and a wonderful guy--- Very sincerely--Eddie D'Ambruoso

Small in stature
If you're most interested in information on the 1956-58 Giants, you'd be better off reading The Glory Game: How the 1958 NFL Championship Changed Football Forever by Frank Gifford, which covers the same time period better in my opinion. "Giants Among Men" is not a bad book, but it's real strength lies in it's dicussion of the post-58 to mid 60's era.

NOSTALGIC AT IT'S BEST
JACK CAVANAUGH DOES A WONDERFUL JOB WITH THIS BOOK. FROM THE LATE 50'S TO EARLY 60'S THE GIANTS WERE THE POWER IN THE NFL EAST. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THEY LOST 5 CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. I MUST ADMIT THAT THEIR OPPONENTS CETAINLY WERE POWER HOUSES (COLTS, PACKERS AND BEARS. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BROWNS FAN AND REALLY ENJOYED THEIR GREAT RIVALRY. THIS BOOK COVERS MANY OF THE GREAT PLAYERS AND COACHES WHO WERE PART OF THAT GREAT ERA. THEIR DEFENSE WAS ONE OF THE ALL TIME BEST. THE FEARSOME FOURSOME ALONG WITH HUFF, TUNNELL AND LYNCH CRUSHED MOST OPPONENTS. THE OFFENSE WAS ALSO POTENT BUT NOT GREAT UNTIL THEY OBTAINED TITTLE AND SHOFNER TO GO WITH GIFFORD, WEBSTER AND ROTE. THE COACHING WAS OUTSTANDING LEAD BY JIM LEE HOWELL AND HIS ASSISTANTS LOMBARDI AND LANDRY. A TEAM OF LEGENDS. THE BOOK REHASHES EACH SEASON ALONG WITH THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. THE PLAYERS AND COACHES INTERVIEWED TAKE THE READER BACK TO THAT ERA FOR A GREAT NOSTALGIC TRIP BACK IN TIME. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL GIANTS AND FANS WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH THIS GREAT FOOTBALL ERA. A MUST READ.

Great football story of the 50's
This was an easy read story of the Giants back in the 50's as the NFL started getting really popular in the U.S.

A Worthwhile Read
Although, there is nothing particularly new in this book it does compile a number of facts and anecdotes that seem to exist elsewhere into a cohesive and quite readable work. It is a probable "must have" for the devoted Giants fan or for those seeking to expand their collection of NFL historical works. Nice to see such former Giant stalwarts such as Andy Robustelli and Charley Conerly get some dedicated ink!
