I guess we don't really know until we know whether or not these survival books are any good but in my life I have purchased 4 of these books all are in various places where they are easily accessible but too I too I forgot where they were so I bought another one This seems to be the best and well written book on the subject that I have seen. It. It explains the size of the explosion and and wind direction and so much scientific stuff that anyone can understand it. It also has the old Civil War defense layouts of how to make underground shelters to better your chance of surviving Personally I know where I'm going to go when I die so I feel pretty confident. I simply purchased these books just in case I survived. Though I wish it had more information it really is the most jam packed book on the subject I was able to find and I am very happy with my purchase. For those who can't afford to pay for it like those on welfare it is actually free for download on the Internet. And don't take advantage because this this is only for those who cannot afford it but will need it if they survive. Or we'll need it if they Want to survive and if you have the money to pay for it and don't that is being a thief thief in my opinion. Anyway I pray our father to text Carol all of us as he wills. In the meantime there's this book that I suggest every household has at least one copy of. Even those who can't afford to pay for it.

Some of us remember the Cold War, and the free Civil Defense information that was available at that time. Regular circulars and books back then advised on how to size, and construct air filtration systems, fallout shelters, including field-expedient fallout-shelters, as well as a variety of useful survival information in a dangerous world. Back then many collected the circulars to form libraries. And local libraries also held them in stock for parties who were interested in taking responsibility for their own safety and security. This book contains those exact civil defense circulars. Almost all of those circulars that I recall reviewing decades ago are here. This book is an invaluable resource for people who would like to take self-reliant responsibility for their own safety in the event of international conflict or in the event of a handful of natural and/or manmade disasters. In my professional opinion as a 32 Year Career Soldier in the US Army, this is an invaluable resource that can help the majority of people to take prudent and responsible actions right now, that could save the lives of themselves and their children, as well as position them to help their neighbors. I would highly recommend this as a resource for most people who believe there is a possibility of Nuclear Conflict, or who are located in close proximity to a Nuclear Power Plant. Either case will present many of the same issues. This book will help you review your options, and gauge your level of preparedness to your personal situation and risk level, with many helpful tips to keep it practical and affordable. Only you know what you are worried about. Preparation is almost always the cheapest and most effective therapy. After you have addressed the largest of your risks, when you think of those frightening possibilities you can say, "I've got that", and know that it is true. And as there is a stigma to this kind of practical action, please allow me to add this it of personal experience: It is the "End of the World" for someone every single day. Usually, those were the places I was sent. And as a person with expertise in this area, you might ask why I have purchased this book. The answer is: TO SHARE IT. Whatever you do, whatever troubles may come your way, they are better faced with friends. And that is what prudence is really all about, being ready to face the world together, not just the world as we wish it was, but as it really is.

The new material is interleaved between pages of the classic, which I first came across about 20 years ago. Even if you don't plan to implement any of the advice in here, it is a fascinating read that debunks the idea that a nuclear war is unsurvivable. I am still reading but I wish there was more specific advice for renters and people who don't live near any underground shelter and can't get to a proper shelter in time, but I suppose the advice would be very limited and situation-dependent. The new material about EMP protection is rather defeatist about that scenario, except to say that it is unlikely. Minor gripes: the page number positions are kinda random and it's not super easy to find the new material, which is not in the table of contents or index. Even adding a unique border to the new pages would be very helpful. Also, the page numbers are sometimes in the gutter as they are mostly direct from the original edition. It just makes finding stuff a little harder than if they were always in the center of the header/footer, or to the outside edge. Nevertheless, these are small complaints for a valuable update to the original lifesaver. Cheers to the Mr. Harris for putting the book online as well. If you're thinking about this then you should get your own inexpensive paper copy today. When you need this for real, you may not have a computer. Besides it is also mighty interesting in its own way.

Overall the book is filled with useful information, not just data, but Information derived from that data. My one negative is the font used would be easier to read if it were darker.

Great book. Full of excellent advice

For those who contemplate enduring a nuclear war, but wish to survive it, paying attention to the contents of this book will tilt the odds of doing so, greatly in your favor. Written by an actual nuclear engineer and annotated by a current scientist to make us aware of today's technology, it's as good an off-ramp from death due to atomic bomb as I've found in my nearly 82 years on Earth.

We've read several of these types of books, some are more informative than others, and some are just packed with information. You know, it kinda sucks finding out you're surrounded by Nuclear facilities. Some are 35mi, some are 65mi away. Reading this (and other books like it), got us looking into it a little closer & realizing that living on a farm doesn't make us immune or safe from some kind of accident. Knowing how to deal with such a situation ahead of time, could be the difference between life and death. If it goes UP, it's gonna come DOWN somewhere. Knowing how to prepare, even preparing at the simplest level - why not. If nothing else, at our age, it's also entertaining. This book is the gold standard of Nuclear Preparedness. Not all of it's light reading, but all of it's invaluable, and could save your life or at least get your act together if some kind of disaster, Nuclear or other did happen.

Growing up through the cold war I had a number of ideas I'd heard of, read about, or had seen on tv and the movies. The authors of this book series have taken a lot of that and boiled it down to understandable information and dispelled some of the myths or fabrications about a nuclear war. Although obviously a horrible undertaking regardless of some of these truths being less than was originally told, it does not attempt to sugarcoat reality with a sunny outlook (picture an atomic mushroom cloud with a happy face). No, it maintains the harsh realities of such a post apocalyptic event, but also gives simple guidance and realistic preps for all people. In that sense it provides hope against a bleak future bereft of any possibility to live above ground ever again. My advice is to read it and be skeptical, but also to have an open mind and do your own research.

I purchased this book because I am, naturally, prepping to provide myself with everything I need to survive an apocalypse such as nuclear war. This book is a time tested reference book that has been updated to include new technology. I think it is very important to own some manuals such as this especially important one, to know what to do in an apocalyptic situation, and in that situation one might thank oneself for buying hard copies of these books, rather than just e-books and pdf files. If anything they will give me something to read if the internet goes down. I think this particular book is not only valuable in the case of nuclear war but it includes other information which may be helpful in a grid down situation as well such as might happen in a bird flu pandemic or global economic meltdown, both of which are possible. Of course, it should be augmented with other books on survival and survival medicine in my opinion. Also, this book has information about the effects of a nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere on the Pacific region too. That will be invaluable information living in Australia. This book was highly recommended to me by Canadian Prepper, an online source I have high regards for, as one of the two most important books to have, and I have perused this book and I think it would be very useful in the event of a calamitous event, especially if there is a nuclear war. Also, this edition is by far the best because it has been updated to include new technology such as LED lights instead of candles. Solar LED lights are so accessible now but did not exist when this book was first written during the Cold War.

I am a few chapters into this book and all I can say is it is well worth the hype! I have learned a phenomenal amount of information in the first 50 odd pages. If you have ever questioned what it would be like to live through a nuclear incident, what you’d need to build a shelter or just about nuclear bombs, radiation and radioactive ions in general, this book is for you! Packed full of information as the result of extensive research, it is great for people that love detail but don’t want to be dragged down by too much dull and complicated technical information. Even if Nuclear war isn’t high on your interest list, it has great general prepping/survival information on food storage, water, shelter etc. it is probably my favourite read in a long time and I am so glad I made the purchase.

Die meisten Buecher zu dem Thema kann man so aufsumieren: "Hoffen das man sofort stirbt und nicht langsam an der Strahlenkrankheit stirbt oder im nuklearen Winter verhungert". Dieses Buch ist deutlich optimistischer und gibt Anweisungen was man machen soll. Wenn es denn soweit ist, ist es immerhin besser als depressiv auf den Tod zu warten.

The book is printed on a very bad paper, some of the letters didn't even printed due to low quality of the dye. The part with schemes for shelter is not usable at all (You can't see anything with such a bad quality.) Finally, no additional updated information about the current events. Basically the merchant just decided to raise some money reselling the old book poorly printed.
