This enclosure works perfectly. Only thing to note is that it doesn't work with older SSD drives, only nvme.

I purchased this to connect a WD Black SN850 4 TB SSD to a Mac Mini M4, Mac OS Sequoia 15.2. The first unit I received was obviously a customer return, no silicon heat transfer pad in the box. The second unit was factory sealed. Unit is difficult to assemble because the aluminum heatsink fin is grooved to slide over the SSD (not press down on top-too tight). This process is almost impossible because the silicon heat transfer pad which sits between the SSD and the heatsink is sticky and the heatsink cannot be slid over the SSD. I carefully spread the "legs" of the heatsink and snapped in down over the SSD hoping I hadn't damaged the SSD. Well I hadn't but once connected to the Mac, the enclosure cannot maintain a connection longer than a few minutes. I started a file transfer consisting of many folders and files and came back an hour later. The transfer had failed after about 40 GB of data transferred because the enclosure had disconnected and reconnected. While sitting at the computer, I am seeing frequent error messages stating Disk Not Ejected Properly even though I'm not seeing the drive disappear from the desktop. Anyway, this product is poorly designed for assembly and isn't useable for me due to it's inablility to stay mounted.

I have a Sabrent Rocket 4 2TB NVMe drive mounted inside this enclosure with the included Thunderbolt 4 certified cable to a Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 port on a MacBook Pro. It achieves 2.5-3.0 GB/ps in benchmarks. I have never seen throttling or heat issues, even when I filled it about 3/4 full initially. It is so much faster than SATA, HDD, and older SSDs that I've had that I question if I would ever want something faster. I hope they are still making and selling this the next time I need an external NVMe enclosure.

I use this to extend the Apple Mac mini M4 as there is no internal standard m.2 expansion, still in the latest version of the mini. Thankfully, the standard mini now sports Thunderbolt 4 ports and the 40 Gbps should be not the limitation as the USB ports on the Mac Mini M1.Unlike another external dual SSD drive enclosure I have, the Orico 40 Gbps enclosure only suits one SSD and is fully powered via the Thunderbolt port. That makes it somewhat easier to deal with. In fact, the power brick for mentioned RAID enclosure was relatively massive, and this is a very welcome difference.The enclosure is spacious but also, ever so slightly, not tall enough to accommodate an m.2 SSD with heat-sink. I migrated a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB SSD with Heatsink for PS5 (rated at 7000 MB/s) into this enclosure. This drive was severely hampered by the ports in Satechi expansion base used with an Apple Mac mini M1, and this Orico 40Gbps enclosure is a much better home for it when leaving the lid off. The mentioned original heat sink does not allow to install the lid for it being maybe 1.5 mm too tall. I could remove the pre-installed heat sink from the drive, but the included small heat spreader would be less efficient and, in my case, the enclosure being open is actually hidden under the desk. Still, it would have been perfect if there was about 2 mm more clearance inside the enclosure. (See pictures)The performance with the Mac Mini M4 even somehow exceeded specs with ~3000 Mbps for Read and ~3200 Mbps for Write in the BlackMagic disk speed test. That's enough to enable green checkmarks for all video formats reported by the BlackMagic test. Incidentally, it's also quite a bit FASTER than the built-in SSD, especially in writing (~2000 MB). I opted for the M4 256GB version and now have 2TB of external storage that is faster than the internal. Bonus: Also at a much lower price than Apple could offer an internal storage configuration!Of course, as the MacOS isn't very flexible in supporting different drives from the internal primary drive for software installation, it's mostly limited to data. That's fine for me but might be a limitation to some.

The ORICO NVMe SSD enclosure accepts a card-based internal SSD. I measure a read/write speed of nearly 3000 Gb/sec using a MacBook Pro M1 Max with Thunderbolt 4 ports. The case is extruded aluminum, and can be assembled easily with four screws. I installed a Samsung 990 SSD, which generates a lot of heat in operation. The case provides excellent heat dissipation, and includes a thermal transfer pad which fits between the drive and the outer case.

I really wanted to like this drive. I used it with a Samsung Pro 990 with heatsink SSD drive and a Mac mini M2 base model with Thunderbolt 4. This SSD drive was too large for the cover plate to fit over the drive, so I used it vertically so that there was a little air circulation. No matter, this drive was incredibly hot to the touch almost all the time. And when I mean hot, I mean fry an egg on top of it hot.Despite the awesome heat generated, this combination was incredibly fast. I don't have screenshots, but the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test regularly showed read speeds at 3200 MB/s. This was more than I could have hoped for. But it was too good to be true. This drive randomly disconnected multiple times per hour, and each time it would, some application on my computer would hang, and I would have to restart.I switched to a slightly older, slower, smaller capacity WD Blue SSD drive and I thought the speeds would be significantly slower, but lo and behold, the speeds were about 3100 MB/s. Still more than fast enough for my modest needs. I thought that this would be the silver bullet for my random unmounting, and yes, the unmounting has gone down significantly. Maybe be 90%. But it still unmounts, and wrecks havoc on my workflow when it does.I tried another Thunderbolt 4 cable, and the issues remained. At this point, it's the enclosure for me, and I will be returning it sadly.
