Magnum P.I.: The Complete Series [DVD]

Having seen so many episodes of Magnum P.I. in syndication, I wanted to finally watch the series from beginning to end to see the entire story as it was meant to be told. When I saw this complete series marked down for sale by Amazon, I seized the opportunity. No regrets. I have just completed Season 1 and there have been no major issues with the quality of discs nor the picture quality - some occasional skips in the playback, but nothing major. A fun show to watch which brings back fond memories of the 80's. It is especially nice to see major plot lines which revolve around the Vietnam War (a wound still fresh in the American mind at the time this show began) as well as World War II; stories we simply don't see much of in weekly Prime Time network television these days.

With the current discount, now was the time to buy. The last time this was shown on TV as repeats, the episodes were grainy and hard to watch. The color on this version is clear and crisp. It brings out the beauty of the island. The audio was consistent and did not make me turn the volume down when a machine gun was being fired or during a car chase. I've only watched the 2 part pilot so far. The pilot had a different theme song, and had Judge Reinhold in a small part. According to the dvd box, this also has several bonus features. A Murder She Wrote crossover Magnum on Ice, and an episode from Knight Rider, The A-Team and Rockford files. Also some episode commentaries. Very happy so far.

With the production of a new Magnum PI TV series -- a spin-off/sequel of the originally aired 1981+ series, I found the modernization objectionable (a female Higgins -- not the same)! I believe the new series should have been named something else. This purchased DVD collection lets one enjoy each episode as originally produced -- with no commercials! The date the episode is aired is included with a synopsis of the story, which is a nice piece of information. The cd's are packaged in two booklike plastic holders [4 series per holder] with several cd's to the spindle. While the holders are really nice for preserving the cd's as a unit, I'm having difficulty taking each disc off the spindle. While the stories focus on "detective" stories of mystery and murder, there is enough comic relief provided by character interaction that one doesn't feel depressed at the conclusion.

I always recorded the Magnum P.I. reruns. Then I spotted the complete series. I couldn't believe the low price. The DVD's are not re-mastered but they are better quality than TV was in the 1980's. I looked up some Magnum Websites that contain episode lists, trivia, and short scenarios of each show. The DVD's are arranged in order of season. Each plastic case holds one season with DVD's in a book type layout. They vary regarding the amount of episodes each DVD contains. Each DVD menu tells the episodes it contains and has them laid out in order of original air date. They all fit neatly in the durable cardboard case. It seems complete to me and I've watched almost all of my disks. What I really enjoy is watching the show evolve over the 8 season lifespan. I still enjoy watching a few episodes every week.

The episodes of MAGNUM, P.I. themselves in this set are wonderful. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching them again in this nicely priced DVD collection. The picture quality isn't always 100% perfect, but it generally looks pretty great for a series that originally aired in the 1980s. My main problem with this set is the way each of the discs were very tightly placed under circular plastic tabs. It was way more difficult than it should have been to remove them. I had to forcefully bend the majority of them out of the case and was often afraid that the discs were going to break from the pressure I needed to apply to them as I bent them from side to side to remove them. Thankfully, I was lucky and none of the discs broke. I hope others who bought or buy this DVD set get lucky like I did. Again, the episodes here are very well worth the money. The original MAGNUM, P.I. was one of the best and most entertaining detective series ever, so I'm very happy to now own all of the episodes. I just wish the manufacturing of this DVD set had been better. Sleeves would have been a much better option for the discs instead of the plastic they used here.

I’m an old lady going down memory lane! The show was great then and it is now, but I do miss looking at that gorgeous TOM SELLECK. HE WAS ON A HUGE POSTER MY AUNT HAD IN HER BEDROOM. We, both, would just stare. The programs are fantastic!
