is the background supposed to light up?

No it doesn’t light up. The color shows up with the pen or just using a finger. My granddaughters love theirs. They are almost 2 yrs old and enjoy scribbling and then with a press of a button it disappears.

Do they not come with a sting/lanyard?

I think they do. They are in another state I bought 5 of them and they love them

Any have specifically brightest screen?

I’ve bought three of these, and their screens seem to be the same brightness. They don’t have an adjustment, and I haven’t noticed one is brighter than the other. I give these to my nieces children. They love them. I enjoy it too!

The writing doesn't erase even after I change the battery. What do I do?

I’ve never seen that happen in any of them I thought. You just slide the lever and it clears the screen. There is an adjustment on it that you push and you are unable to clear. That function is for a picture she want to save and show people. Perhaps that button got stuck in. Check to see if it’s on save picture
