Working fine
The metal rails are hanging loose with no support. A friend found a better version for couple of bucks less

Excellent but be careful to get the right one.
Here is a fine product...even better if you get the right one. My point here is be careful to buy the correct adapter (and probably the SSD for it). I bought the listed unit before I opened the case on my laptop to check the plug type I had. I bring this up because I am a tech and should have known better ! My own machine, for Pete sakes and I messed up. These adapters are great, replacing the old mechanical drives. Of course it’s gotta be the correct one. The moral to the story ? This is an excellent adapter, nice and fast...a perfect compliment to the SSD assuming you get a nice fast SSD. Look ma ! No moving parts except for the fans.

Works as described, as a M.2 to U.2 adapter.
Anyone who leaves negative reviews on this product about it not working in their SAS server or with SATA drives really needs to STFU and stop tinkering with hardware they don't understand. This product adapters the M.2 form factor to U.2, while leaving the signals intact as-is. Its a plug adapter, essentially. You will need a PCIe endpoint to plug this into, like a bifurcation card with the correct SFF ports.Anywho, using this product with a Samsung 980 NVMe drive in my Dell R720 after upgrading on of the bays with a U.2 backplane + PCIe bifurcation card = great success.

Got a proper workstation? This works as a U.2 pass through with no glitches!
Pedigree workstation? This works as a U.2 pass through with no glitches on my Dell Precision 5820T. Dell wanted $125 for their enclosure and this bests it by letting more air go over the chipset. Get a lower profile heat sink to make sure you have clearance for a front drive bay.

Funny how "it works" gets undervauled
I thought I'd save some money by buying a $10 Other-brand card. This connected to my 400GB Intel 750, meant to be the OS drive for my home server. After initial install, during the setup and "getting ready" phase my system would freeze, and I'm forced to hard reboot. I couldn't get past initial setup, and it took some time troubleshooting. It was either the cheap SFF-8643 card, or my drive (my drive was pulled from my working system prior). Switched to this StarTech card, everything works fine.

If you know what this is, it works great!
Worked great! It sounds like many reviewers simply don’t understand what this is. I added a PCIe M.2 NVME drive to my system using this. Many server have U.2 PCIe drive bays, this allows you to add an M.2 PCIe drives to those bays. For me I had an Occulink port on my motherboard, with a simple cable I turned that into U.2.People shouldn’t be giving negative reviews simply because the bought the wrong device.

Great for M.2 to U.2 if you need it but dont expect it to fit SATA.
Love the M.2 part. But missed the U.2 output that is NOT SATA and is not compatible with anything that goes to USB. Sigh. Dont make that mistake. Probably great if you have a U.2 port inside your binary bit basher but not gonna be of use to say image an M.2 from a USB port. Dont get me wrong- I have a bunch of Startech interface bits and they all work great but this one was bundled with a cable that isnt compatible with U.2 and left me with no place to plug into. Exchanging it for a PCIe bus card and going to try to run the magic imaging machine all inside a host PC. I know, sounds sick. It is, but the PC gets to keep the M.2 once I am done with it. Fair enough.

All I am trying to do is connect Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 to any of my computer's USB3 ports. It should be easy - I have been doing it for years with all kinds of SSD drives. Apparently PCIe NVMe M.2 drives are different? My setup is below. See attached image. Maximus Impact VIII mobo + WD Black SN750
Using this adapter and an appropriate U.2 cable (purchased separately) to house a WD Black SN750 NVMe drive to use as a VR game library. When both cables plugged in, detected the drive immediately. After formatting, drive was benchmarked through Crystal Mark - expected read / write speeds for an NVMe drive. The adapter does not appear to impede drive performance at all, much to my relief as it takes the sting out of having an odd motherboard with a U.2, but not M.2 PCIe inputs and allows for much desired NVMe speeds without forking out ludicrous amounts for a dedicated U.2 storage device.

Samsung 960 Pro/Evo & HP ProLiant ML350 G9
Used 6 of these with Samsung 960 Pro and 960 Evo NVMe M.2 drives in an NVMe drive bay extension kit for a HP ProLiant ML350 Gen 9 and they all worked a treat - excellent performance, no compatibility errors or warnings and showed up straight away in DiskMgr. Couldn't be happier.
