The author focused in his first volume of pure chess calculation on middlegames. Romain has carefully selected 496 positions, which arose in real games in the recent past. He separated the exercises into 11 different categories, covering both tactics and strategy, attack and defence. This book is a fantastic training tool for any player to improve his level of chess thinking. Before, in trying to calculate an attack, or continuing an initiative, I would get lost in trying to find the optimal exploitation of my attacking chances, rather than combining those ideas with Romain Edouard's views about what constitutes poor coordination of pieces and then how to exploit these weaknesses.. So now, I ask myself: how can Black(the opponent coordinate his defensive resources, or more precisely, How can I attack in such a way that the opponent can't organize his defensive resources. The additional ten chapters are almost equally valuable.For example, Chapter 4 showcases Edourd's sharp/profound insights into the actual experience at the chess board, and the difficulties the player faces dealing with both his internal tensions and the real external pressures. Along with being a very strong GM, Edouard is a gifted teacher with 2 outstanding capacities: He differentiates in constructive ways for the player, the realities faced in competitive chess, and then , remarkably, provides example after example of disciplined Methods (Emanauel Lasker) for coping with the realities of chess. I look forward to his volume on the Endgame. I feel he has helped me significantly with my quest in the learning and mastery of chess. Review: Great book - Very challenging, fun puzzles.

Got this book along with Thinking Inside the Box from The House of Staunton couldn't believe how fast these items were shipped in perfect condition cant wait to dig in hats off to The House of Staunton for such a speedy delivery. The book itself is great so far, taking time to work through the problems presented is just what I expected you have to work at it, but I love it.

Different from the rest - brilliant training material...
I've only read the first chapter, so it's not fair to comment too much. I love the warm up exercises taken from recent games. My only quib, I'd like to know which openings these middlegame position arose (some are obvious), but think the author shld hv included them. Rest of the chapter headings look interesting. Good training for my limited brain matter.
