Hello Faith! I would certainly think so! Both the mortar and the pestle on mine are grooved on the entire surface! With no grooves on either, grinding becomes tough! If it’s new, I’d return it for another one! I do use a stiff brush to clean both ends to maximize grinding and I only grind medicines! Perhaps the grooves were not very deep to begin with?
