are there instructions?

Yes each one comes with a set of instructions on how to do it. But I think it's fun to try and figure out. It is in Chinese but if you know the rotations then it shows you in a diagram and has letters R,L,U, D, F, B and R inverted, L inverted, etc. that shows which face to turn (r=right, u=up, f= front, etc.
