At 3:38 there's a reference to getting boxed in - but no mention of how horses move laterally into other lanes - ?

Lane changing is very much encouraged and often helpful.  A horse may move laterally provided the adjacent space is unoccupied.  This may assist in "moving around" traffic.  However, a horse may at no time move backwards.  That is, if no forward is possible, and no lateral move is possible, the horse is "boxed in"... at least temporarily.

Question 3

Why does the game only provide for three horses finishing in one roll when there are 8 horses? How do you know it's a max of 3 always?

Good question!  A three-way photo finish is quite rare.... roughly once every 20 to 30 races, and a four-way or more is execptionally rare.... Maybe once every 200 races or so, but..... in earlier comments we addressed this: In the event of 4-way (or more) photo finish, we suggest (figuring that there must have been some serious jostling for position down the stretch), that an INQUIRY results.  In this case, a LARGE D8 is rolled to determine which horse(s) is DQ'd from the race.  That is, knocked out of the top three....  When three remain, then roll the D6 to determine the finishing order of the 3 horses that qualified.  Again, this is a VERY RARE situation, but it can happen.... and if it DOES!.. Oh, what a race!

What are the rules of photo finish

For the basic: Race begins with all horses positioned in front of the GREEN "start" line.
PLAY: Up to eight players may each select a horse. Players take turns rolling all eight dice.
Each roll indicates which horses move… and how many spaces each horse moves..
BIG DICE totals are awarded first. When the BIG DICE totals have been awarded, then
the LITTLE DICE totals are awarded.
2) Horses that are trailing move first.
3) Horses may move forwards or sideways - but NEVER backwards. (If no forward or
sideways move is possible when it is a horse's turn to move, that horse is "boxed in" and
forfeits his totals for that size dice).
4) A horse may never occupy the same space as another horse.
WIN: If, following all moves for a given roll, a single horse has crossed over the finish line, this
horse is the race winner and play may continue to determine 2nd and 3rd place.
PHOTO FINISH: If two (or if three) horses have crossed over the finish line following all moves
for a given roll, the result is a PHOTO FINISH! A roll of the six-sided die determines which
photo is used to determine finishing order.
