Impossible to put down once started
Guy Delisle's graphic storytelling of the ordeal of Christophe André at the hands of Chechnyan kidnappers is impossible to put down once started. With an amazingly detailed account from the memory of André, we are pulled into the horror and uncertainty of his situation. Suddenly his priorities change from being an administrator to trying to keep his sanity and to focus on the situation at hand without panicking. The reader is pulled into his world through the use of time, knowing the date and which day of the week it is his only link to the outside world. When we get to the nexus of the story the prisoner is faced with a life or death decision, whether to take this chance at escape and risk the consequences of being caught or to wait until the ransom demands are successfully negotiated. A story of a man in a room handcuffed to a radiator should not be filled with such suspense as this book is. Highly recommended.

What is it like to be held hostage for 3 months
Hostage is my first Guy Delisle book. I think it captures claustrophobia, paranoia and outright fear as one being held captive. A few reviews here, I think, are missing the point that Delisle is declaring. What is it like to be held hostage for 3 months? And what would be going thru YOUR head if this was the case? Poignant, well drawn and real, this is stuff for people who are too comfortable in their lives (just like Christophe Andre was). I'll be looking into this Guy's other work.

You won't be able to put the book down till you've read it all. A rescue ring question whaile I was reading it: what would I have done if I were in the hostage's shoes.

Exceelent Reportage
Guy Delise's graphic novel Hostage (2016) is a return in style to his successful autobiographical graphic novels that drew on his experiences as an animator in Chin and North Korea as well as his experiences with his family in his wife's job as a member of Doctor's Without Frontiers. However, this time he is writing a biography of a Doctors Without Borders administrator Christophe André was kidnapped by armed men and taken away to an unknown destination in the Caucasus region in 1997. It chronicles the stoic experience of a hostage in Chechnya fighting depression and killing boredom by reacting famous battles form history. I don't want to give away the ending, but it is a powerful story of survival in the face of misery.

Incredible life story superbly narrated! A tale of human limits. The quality of the drawings and of the narration in such a confine environment is nailed perfectly. A must read! This book has to win Grand Prix d' Angouleme if it has not done so.

Great story. You would think that a story of a guy stuck in a room for months would be a bore to read. On the contrary, Guy Delisle makes the daily challenge of the main character to stay intellectually and emotionally "alive" a great read.

Nicely Illustrated, bu Really Slow in Certain Parts
I like this author and his illustration style, and the basic true story is compelling. The middle of the book, however, is very slow, even boring. I think this is intentional, as the story is about a man being held hostage in a very spare environment for a long period of time. However, the repetition of panels gets tedious and I ended up skipping ahead to more exciting parts.

Lovely book DAMAGED
It's absolutely sad that Amazon packages absolutely normal stuff in boxes and layers but books are send in paper envelops with not even a bubble wrap. Shows how much we value books. Please send books with care too

Good
I enjoyed the story and the illustrations. A bit too expensive but oh well. Book is big and heavy, came with few scratches on the cover but overall no regrets.

Interesting way to capture this story
This was my first foray into graphic non-fiction, and I found the genre a really effective way to tell the story of a French citizen (worked for an NGO) who was abducted in the 1990's. The graphics were very well done and really gave you a good idea of the mindset of the man who was abducted, his inner thoughts and his surroundings. I had a hard time to put it down (finished it in a few hours).

A wondrous masterwork.
Guy has consolidate with this novel as one of the most important voices on comics nowadays. Hostage is simply the most amazing work he's ever done. It's heartrending, shocking, emotional, breathtaking and above all entirely human. An amazing exploration of how man's psychological and physical components can become so deranged and completely transformed.
