How sturdy are they for hiking off-trail? Do they tear easily?

I would want to certainly not want to get into any briars. Stay on the trail.

I'd like to wear something in the tropics to protect from bugs. Would these likely be too warm?

These pants protect well against rain and wind. As such, they don't breath/ventilate. I would not use them for protection against insects in a warm or hot environment, preferring instead a garment with a mesh construction.

Do these pants have taped seams and a waterproof breathable membrane fabric?

They are water proof and breathable, but, the bottom half of the leg is zippered for boots, and I went across a creek that went up to my knees and water seeped through the zippers and went into my boots. Also, they are not completely water proof if you have to lean down onto your knees in water to observe a small plant or animal. There is another pant that is more "rubberized" that I am still trying to find. I hope that helps? 🤷🏼♀️🤞
