Why didn’t they make an upgraded Z1, and instead tried to straddle the market?

To take a serious stab at answering your question, I think this is the camera most 'consumers' would find useful in most situations... sure the Z1 has a 1" sensor and would have been great to see that improved upon (as I'm guessing it will be one day) but that type of camera would only be truly 'needed' by actual PRO's or folks that do LOTS of night time/low light images.... and if you're at that level, you own a Matterport, not some handheld 360 camera. For those of us that simply 'enjoy' 360 photography, this is perfect balance of high image quality, easy to use and carry, plenty of options and still within the reasonable budget of any prosumer. I really think the actual market only "needs" the S or SC with the V/X being a "Nice to have" camera. However, with the competition ramping up video and still image resolution, this camera is the perfect answer to stay competitive while adding the touch display as an added bonus / while keeping the price in check. Just my .02

Audio is mono or stereo? does it support external mic input in stereo or spatial? if so, how to connect?

Just one mic on this one... for spatial audio, I'd recommend the V or Z1.

Does this work with Matterport and Zillow?

Yes and no. It connects and takes photos, but you only have couple minutes before it starts overheating. Then you have to wait for it to cool down. Stick to other versions of Theta.

Can Wifi and Bluetooth be switched off? Need to use in electrosensitive environment.

Yes. The onboard menu allows both WiFi and Bluetooth to be toggled on or off.
