It is rated at 5 amps continuous. It is designed to be used with a trickle charger which charges at no more than 3 amps - 12 volts. I am sure that it could handle more up to the capacity of the connector and or wires however I do not know what that would be. It is a very well made device. From your question it sounds like you plan another use for it so common sense comes into play. Good luck on your project. Harold

Yes, it has a plastic cap/cover to protect the connectors... at least mine does.

Red goes to positive and does the black go to negative or it should be grounded?

Red to positive and black to negative simply because the cable fitting has a convenient bolt to securely attach it to . (Battery is grounded anyway)

will the eyelets fit the larger screws on rv gel batteries

The eyelets will not fit the terminal screw post on a regular size battery. However, they are easily changed and the effort is well worth it. I have three Interstate deep cycle batteries on my fishing pontoon and one of these units on each battery. Each battery has its own battery box. When it is charging time, just plug the charger into this pig tail and charge. No removing the batter box lid to get to the battery terminals. Great little piece of equipment. Highly recommend Big Spoodie

Useful item

Very small item, not elegant or expensive. However, if you need to quickly connect a charger or other 12v device to an end use, they are perfect. I bought five and have one left here on the farm.
