The bottom line - The mug works perfectly and does what it says it will do and kept my coffee within 2 degrees of my desired temperature the whole time - I did have an issue and I would give customer service 10 stars if I could for how they handled it Here is the longer more detailed review I was frustrated with my coffee being cold half way through drinking it so was intrigued when I learnt of the Ember mug. I had concerns as it was a new company and new technology. I read all the tech reviews I could find and all - yes all of the reviews on Amazon and lots of the reviews on starbucks. I decided to wait as well let’s be real new tech is going to have issues but when I saw so many positive reviews coming through I decided to try it. I was still expecting that there was a chance I would have an issue but I was comforted by buying it through amazon and by the postive reviews about their customer service and felt any issues would be dealt with satisfactorily. Well I did have an issue and customer service was everything you want it to be. No excuses, no blame the customer, they were sincere, genuinely wanted to resolve it, incredibly responsive and personal - no cliche copy paste corporate lines. My issue was one I had not seen anyone else comment on and Ember said they had not heard of it but were very concerned. Basically the lid was too big. You needed to be very strong to screw it on and off and after a few attempts the plastic was wearing off from the friction. We discussed it by email ( note they do not respond on weekends ) and then I shipped it back with the mug at their expense and they sent me a replacement the day after they received it. My new mug works perfectly. I brewed my coffee into it directly this morning at 140 degree. Within 8 minutes it cooled it to my desired temp of 130 degrees and kept it there within 2 degrees for an hour until I had finished my coffee. I kept the inner lid depressed the whole time as I didn’t want to keep opening and closing it but it still stayed hot as dialed in. When I first depressed the lid it did spray 5 or 6 drops of crema out but I closed and opened it a couple of more times and it didn’t repeat that. I would be a little cautious the first time and maybe put a napkin over it. It’s possible it was a tad over the max fill line so it may have been user error. After it kept my coffee hot at 130 degrees OFF the charger plate btw the battery was at 69%. Other considerations The mug has pleasing aesthetics. Quite Apple like. It’s simple and graceful. Has a good weight and a pleasing tactile feel. The charger is slim and simple in style too. The rim is thin. I dislike drinking from thick rimmed mugs so was pleased with this detail. The 360 degree opening ring to drink out of is also a positive. You don’t have to line up with a hole every time you take a sip. The lid doesn’t leak! That’s a great feature combined with a quick and easy way to drink from it by just pressing down on the centre ring of the lid. I’ve had soooo many travel mugs leak I had given up on them until Ember came along. It was a big selling feature for me. There is nothing this mug didn’t do that it said it would and it did everything it said it would. You may wish it did more but it’s only fair to measure it on what it promises and if you want to get cutting edge technology then realistically be prepared to have an issue but you should demand excellent customer service to rectify and they certainly provide that. A measure of a company is how well they manage a problem. Two thumbs up to Ember support team! If you want to enjoy every drop of your coffee at the right temperature without gulping it down all at once I recommend this mug. It’s just made my mornings a whole lot more pleasant 😊 I am attaching a pic of how my first lid fit ( it was too big and sat too high in the mug ) and how my new lid fits - obviously this is before you screw then in place so if your lid seems to fit too tightly this will give you some perspective for comparison.

Sometimes these reviews get mixed in with the different versions in the mug so I will start by which one and the price. It's the Ember Travel Mug v1 (black) for $248 in Jan 2022. I haven't tried any other smart mugs like this so don't have much to compare but as far as I'm concerned it has three jobs. First let me know what temperature the drink is at. Second keep it warm until I'm finished drinking it. Third accomplish the first two steps without annoying me. It mostly does all three. The biggest thing I like is no longer burning my mouth playing the temperature guessing game. You know the anxiety of tilting a hot mug closer and closer knowing that you could have a bit of molten lava touch your tongue? That's no longer a thing. Although this does take time to accomplish. Basically, thirty mins to an hour. I have a dumb mug that it takes longer but that's because it's basically a thermos. Also, no more race to finish the mug or face the second half of the drink being cold. As long as you drink it withing a reasonable amount of time I would say. By the time let my drink cool down (hot coco these days) there is about 60-75% battery left. I am not one to nurse a drink, so it doesn't usually take me two hours. Yes, you do have to turn it off manually or risk the chance that it will deplete its batteries just sitting on your desk. It does have an auto shutoff but that's TWO HOURS. Just finish your drink and turn it off. I imagine if I had this in the office, I could get two uses from it per day pretty easily without recharging. Good - Temperature display on mug and phone app, but you don't have to use the phone app. - Outside of the mug isn't completely insulated, but it's not like you will burn your hands. It's mildly warm, which feels good on a cold day. - As easy to clean as any other mug with a mug brush. Bad - Price too high. I don't see the value in this brand so far and would try cheaper alternatives. Also, the v2 model is $100 less? - Anti-spill lid is not very well designed. You have to push it in mechanically to open it and it locks in place while you're drinking. This leaves the possibility open for you to open it, set it aside, knock it over and spill it. My dumb mug has a better design where you have to hold a button down while drinking and when you let go of it the lid closes. - Electronics seem wonky. It didn't work from the start. Put it on the base, paired it with phone, let it charge for 4 hours. The battery animation on the mug was showing charging but it stayed at 0% the whole time. I think this is the flat battery issue others have stated where it takes 6 hours to charge initially. I opened a ticket, but the problem fixed itself. Now it won't turn on unless it's in the charging base! It's not just a one-time glitch, it does this every time. I will have to open another ticket, but this is already getting annoying and not a good first impression. - Charging is outdated. You cannot charge the mug by itself with USB-C, micro USB, etc. You have to have that charging stand. That charging stand itself also doesn't have any modern connectors like mentioned above, it's just a wall plug. So, no charging in your car with a cigarette lighter adapter and no charging on the go unless you bring the base charger with you or buy a second one to keep with it. - No power light. There is an electronic display on the mug which gives you pretty much all the information you need. However, unless you touch the Ember logo, it doesn't look like its "on" or even a smart mug. They could just have had one little LED to remind you remind you that the mug is on, so you don't leave it sitting there discharging its battery before the two-hour auto-shutoff kicks in. Update: The mug stopped powering on unless you power it on while it's in the charger. I opened another case and was told that the mug is now out of warranty. Conveniently it expired during the 6 days it took them to get back to me, but they offered me the v2 mug for $89. No thanks. Seriously a one-month warranty on a $248 mug?

First off, if you’re here contemplating the price and you’ve made it this deep into the reviews, who are you kidding, you should buy it. It’s awesome. Alright, now into the nitty gritty: 1) This will be the most attractive mug you own. You didn’t make the purchase for the sleek design, but it sure as hell is an added benefit. 2) You will never have to chug coffee when it hits the sweet spot again. Using other vacuum seal mugs I often need to let the coffee sit for 10 minutes with the lid off so I don't burn my tongue, but if I wait too long I’ve got a lukewarm beverage. I really didn’t appreciate what a luxury having the perfect sip was prior to owning this mug. Early mornings are slightly more tolerable and I can’t go back now. 3) I’ve read a few reviews about the battery life being short, but I haven’t experienced it myself. LIFEPROTIP: the hotter the coffee in the longer the battery lasts. Again not much of an issue, but I’ve gotten more than the alleged two hours without a charge. (If the previous reviewer is correct on how the cup actually insulates then you can also boil extra water and add it to the mug while your coffee brews!) 4) I use this travel mug just as much at home as I do on the go. When working on projects I put this bad boy on the charging coaster on my desk and my coffee stays at 138 for forever. If their regular mug is more your style then far be it from me to convince you otherwise, but I like that this is more dynamic. 5) I haven’t much tinkered with the app. They’ve made it so easy to control manually, but what tech would be complete without an app? None. You’ve gotta have the app. 6) This is no regular travel mug and isn’t right for everyone. That’s okay. You’re probably not an average joe who tolerates some average joe. You’re likely someone who ended up here because you were genuinely interested in bettering your everyday coffee experience. For you, sir/madam/human this mug, this mug is for you.

Excellent cup, but it only lasted just over a year. For the money that I paid for it, I would need a quality would be a bit higher. As it relates to how long the product last.

First off I would like to say that I highly recommend Ember mugs to friends and family. The thought leaders at Ember have brought products to the marketplace that can keep your hot tea or coffee at the perfect temperature all day. Ember mugs are not perfect, but as with any new technology that brings pleasure to my daily life I am a proud supporter. You are reading this review because you or a loved one wants to keep hot beverages hot. For your satisfaction with the product there is one important question to ask- when can the Ember Travel Mug be left on the charging station? The battery lasts 1-2 hours, depending on conditions, so you need to ask yourself whether the battery life will be suitable for your daily routine. The Ember mug is an ideal solution to keep your beverage hot if you work in an office. I charge my mug overnight, take it with me during my morning commute, put it on a charging station at work, and take it home at the end of the day. My coffee and tea stay hot all day. The bad: The design of the lid is flawed. Although the lid is functional, it is fragile and two lids have broken for me so far. Ember customer service made it right and promptly sent me replacement lids. Now I use and wash the lids very gently. I also purchased the ceramic Halo lid, which allows me to enjoy the beverage's aroma and avoid using my fat fingers to push the delicate plastic lid while working. Depending on your daily routine the battery life may not fit your needs if you cannot put it on charging station while at work. In the morning I need to press the power button while it sits on charging station, which is a little inconvenient. The good: The Ember Travel Mug looks sleek, feel solid in hand, and keeps my hot tea/coffee at the perfect temperature all day. Simply put the Ember Travel Mug works as advertised. Tips and tricks: Ember uses a heat-absorbing substance in the walls of the mug to keep your beverage at the perfect temperature. To maximize battery runtime, fill your mug with boiling hot water and let it sit a minute before first use of the day. In the same respect, do not fill your mug with a lukewarm beverage since this will drain the battery to raise the temperature. Whenever possible keep your mug on the charging station to keep your drink hot without using the battery. When your mug is empty and onncharging station, turn off your Ember to ensure the battery is being charged instead of heating. Be sure to clean your mug and lid gently with something not abrasive. Scratches in metal and plastic can lead to bacterial growth. If youbare interested in keeping one charging station at home and one at work, I would suggest buying the $80 Ember ceramic mug with charging station instead of the standalone $35 charging station. The Ember Travel Mug and Ember ceramic mug have charging stations that look different, but are compatible with all Ember mugs. Share and enjoy :0)

Initially, I had an issue with the product where I couldn't get it to work at all. I determined the cause to be a necessary software update, which then wouldn't process due to an incompatibility with a new version of iOS. Two weeks later, I got my mug updated and got to use it. My first experience was putting coffee into the mug, lid closed. I kept the liquid under the "Fill Line" as instructed, and when my drink reached temperature and I went to open it to drink, the lid "popped" violently, and sprayed liquid everywhere. If you travel with this lid and use it in the closed position, expect to have to force the lid open and have liquid spray out in all directions. It's not a rare occurrence with regular use. The experience, upon using the mug, was nothing exceptional. It would keep drinks warm for about two hours, set to a specific temperature. But, unless it's plugged into its charging pad, I've found it will occasionally "forget" to keep the drink warm. I'll tap the logo, the mug will light up and inform me my drink has dropped twenty degrees from where I had it set, and it has to try to warm it up. Not quite the experience I expected, but it's not a major issue. Then, the lid broke. The lid is a ring in the center of the mug, and you have to depress it, where it latches and stays open to allow you to drink. My lid broke such that the lid would no longer latch into place, and would rock off to one side or the other, so that I could either get no liquid out at all, if the lid were centered, or I could get a sporadic and slow trickle of liquid out by getting the lid stuck inside itself. I contacted them and was summarily shipped a replacement lid, and I thought perhaps it would be a fluke. I got the lid, and continued as normal. In this time, the mug would often (probably 8 times out of 10) refuse to turn on without first being touched to the charger. Again, not a great experience for a $150 coffee mug. Then, just now, my second lid broke. I'm going to have to contact customer support again, and see if they'll ship me another lid. All this has occurred since September 2017, a five-month period. Not the level of quality I would presume to get from such an expensive luxury product, but I'll have to consider this a lesson learned. I had high hopes for this product, but it would seem the Kickstarter Curse is as present as ever. It has been a considerable waste of money, energy, and time, and I do not recommend anyone buy this product, or any other product from Ember.

So I felt like a review was warranted, because this little mug seems to have quite a lot of mixed reviews. I think that's because people buy it expecting it to do something that it wasn't designed to do. It all depends on your need. If you need a mug to hold a hot temperature, without electricity, for hours, this isn't the mug for you. And there is no such mug, aside from vacuum sealed options - in which case, those are better for that purpose than this one is. I like my coffee at 140. This mug will hold it there for about an hour on battery-alone. BUT, I rarely ask it to do that. PRIMARY USE: I wanted a way to keep coffee at a perfect temp, sitting next to me while I type reports, or visit with a patient in my office. I drink coffee (sometimes tea) throughout the day. It was far too often I was running to the microwave to heat up a cup - not ideal. With the Ember, I can have my mug sitting next to my computer at home, next to my computer at the office, or next to my therapy chair at the office... yes this means buying more than one docking station. But, come on - this whole product is a very 1st-world problem solver, anyhow. SECONDARY USE: I'm also a part-time law student, and I visit the law school in Minnesota once or twice each semester for intensive residencies. I get there at around 7am and stay till around 5pm. How can I get coffee? Starbucks is too far to walk. The student center coffee is unacceptable. I needed a solution to brew my own coffee, at my desk. My solution is the combination of this mug (to provide hot water at the perfect temperature) and the Handpresso Auto, which heats its own water, and brews an espresso shot directly into my already perfectly temperature Ember mug... The result? A lovely Americano, brewed at my desk using tap water and an Illy espresso pod. For this method, I do need to wait about 15 to 20 minutes for the water to be heated up to 140 (depending on how hot the water was when I first put it into the Ember). ACCURACY: So far, for me, it's been very accurate. I have tested it at different times with a laser thermometer, and it's almost spot on each time. CONSTRUCTION: I like the soft touch materials, even on the charging dock. The standard lid is plastic, but works very well. The 360-degree drinking design is nicely thought out. The "dial" feels a bit scratchy - not smooth. Which surprised me, given the great attention to detail in every other aspect of the design (including the lovely packaging - similar to Apple Products packaging). CHARGING: One con that doesn't make much sense to me, is that the battery isn't being recharged, while the mug is on the doc being kept warm. This makes little sense, given that there is enough electricity being input, that both could be happening at the same time: the mug could be heating/maintaining, while the battery is being topped off. Perhaps there is some technical reason this isn't happening. But I can't fathom one. Most people wouldn't be ok with their laptop or phone being un-charchable while it was in use. But, does that change it from 5 stars? No. APP: Kinda neat. I'm a tech nerd, so it's cool, but not really necessary. Would be nice to see a computer app for this - maybe something that could pop up in the notification center of your iMac... sometimes I'm working on the computer and have no idea where my phone is even located. OPTIONAL RING: Embarrassed to say that I did get this LOL. I like the plastic lid, because if I'm traveling or walking around, the spring-loaded lid keeps the splashing at bay, and bug/gnats from sneaking into the coffee (I sometimes do sessions outside). But generally, I prefer the ceramic feel, and was happy to see that as an option - it, too, came in lovely packaging. Hopes for the Future: I'd like to see a car lighter option with a docking station designed to fit into a standard cup holder (about the size of the bottom of the Ember). I have thought about mounting an extra dock in my car, but I think it'd be too difficult. But eventually, it would make sense that Ember could at least increase their sales by 1/3 or even 2/3's if they re-marketed this add-on to EXISTING customers. One huge part of expansion is being able to market a product to your existing customer base (like with the ceramic ring). An auto-version of the base would most certainly be more successful than the ceramic ring. I'd like to see the battery start charging at ANY time the Ember is on the dock - not just while it's powered off. I'd like to see the display modernized. The dot-letters and dot-images remind me of dot matrix printers for some reason. Not the most aesthetically appealing, but not horrible either. Would be nice to turn off the display while on the dock - I don't always want to see what the battery level is - or show off to others my dot-matrix-y display LOL.

I mistakenly bought this without realizing it was only 12 oz capacity despite it being a large container. This means you can brew the largest Kurig size (it fits under a Kurig dispenser, barely) but not if you plan to add any additional liquid, like cream or sweeteners. My biggest mistake was not reading the reviews to see that the battery life is basically non existent. I typically drink coffee over an entire 8 hour shift at work, I was disappointed to see that a full charge went to 0% after about 45 minutes. The coffee was poured at much higher temperature than the mug’s maximum heating capacity, implying that it probably wasn’t even heating the entire time. I’ve noticed that the charging pad barely keeps up with the battery usage if a temperature at or above 130 is selected, meaning even if you could keep the mug on the charging pad in between sips, it would probably still run out of power eventually (how long I don’t know for sure, I would guess it would still last several hours). Unfortunately this isn’t an option for me, so every 2 hours or so I’ll let it sit on the charger for about 30 minutes. In that time, the mug will shut off, leaving me to come back to a room temperature cup of coffee, with only enough battery life to get up to a desired temperature once before dying again. To be fair, there are some positives. It has bluetooth connectivity to a phone app so you can monitor/adjust the temperature remotely and it’ll even display how much liquid is inside. It has a simple LED screen that will cycle through temperature, battery life, and a short customizable message. It’s a good demonstration of how cool these kinds of products will be once the technology catches up a bit. I’ve since read reviews of competitor products, there’s one out there that boasts a 10 hour battery life with 16 oz capacity. That product seems to fluctuate 20 or 30 degrees though, while this Ember mug will keep it pretty much locked in to the selected temperature. The other product also seems to vibrate and make noise as it heats, while the Ember mug is completely silent and otherwise unnoticeable. Overall I’m not impressed given the price to performance ratio. I imagine people who can keep this on the charger all day probably get more use out of it than I can. If people only need about 1-2 hours of heat then I’d recommend just looking for a regular vacuum insulated coffee mug in the $20 range.

Of course this Ember mug is punitively expensive, but as luxury, technological products go, this is the business! It arrives beautifully packaged - as if an Apple product. The mug connects wirelessly to a sleek ‘saucer’ which connects to the power. The internal battery keeps all manner of hot drinks piping hot - at a temperature of your choosing - for at least two hours. The scrolling display is beautifully integrated in the sleek exterior. I love its look and feel and only quibble about the modest 350ml capacity. Hand-washing only, obviously but this product is a triumph of technology over a very mundane issue: cold coffee!
