The springs are intimidating until you put your foot on the trap to steady it. Like a connibear, this no-nonsense trap relies on tremendous impact upon the animal for an instant kill. Squirrels on my property have no interest in something gooey you skewer on a nail. They showed no interest until I put black walnuts in through the access door. Then I caught one large Grey squirrel. Not a mark on it, once I removed the spring from its neck. It works as claimed, though it is not overly productive in comparison to the Have-a-heart traps I have on the property. UPDATE: A Have-a-Heart is useless on young red squirrels. They squeeze out past the door. The trap proved effective on mature red squirrels, though not necessarily producing an instant kill. I trapped two of the family, the male and a little one, before a coyote stole trap, victim, and all. So now I need a new one. Even though grey squirrels seem too smart for the trap, reds are stupid, and I don't mind its species selectivity (except for the coyote part). UPDATE 6 Sept., 2024. Red squirrels at this time of year are crazy for dry black walnuts. This time I resolved to be more systematic in my trapping technique. First, I clamped the trap on my woodworking bench so that I could set it safely without undue exertion. The safety is a nice touch during the setting process, and if you forget to remove it from the springs, you'll just lose your bait. No biggie. MAJOR HINT: Time of year is important. My walnut trees are loaded with the green orbs, but some three year-old nuts I dried for eating emit a strong aroma when cracked with my Duke Walnut Cracker. A couple of cracked nuts inserted by the back flap into the set, safetied trap, receives very quick results if there are any red squirrels in the area. The population ran out at seven, with two chipmunks despatched, as well. All has been quiet for the last two days. It is an excellent trap if properly used.

Our neighborhood has become over run by the squirrel population. Destroying the garden, ravaging the bird feeders and trying to get into the garage. It was time to take action to prevent any more damage. This trap has been incredibly effective. It is extremely rugged and we'll built. It works, buy it if you have a squirrel problem. For more details, see below. In the last 3 weeks, we have eliminated 15 squirrels and 2 chipmunks with one of these larger sized traps. I'm sure that number would be much higher, had I been home to reset the trap during the day and if I had known about baiting it properly. The count generally goes up over the weekend when I'm home all day and down during the work week when I'm not. My baiting tips. At first I baited as the manufacturer suggested, with a soft granola bar piece on the nail in the trap. That yielded nothing but ants for me. Since the squirrels are going after our bird feeders, I decided to try that. A small pile of peanuts and sunflower seeds in the trap has been very successful. My trick is to make sure the pile is visible with a few accessible where they can be reached. They get a taste and then they are committed. See the attached photo. Make sure the trap is in a safe location. Keep far away from children and pets. This thing will easily break adult fingers, so it could do great damage to children and pets. In my case, I have a fenced in back yard with no kids or pets. If someone came over, I'd be sure to remove the trap. It's a little intimidating setting it the first couple of times, but it's quite easy after only a few tries. Make sure to follow the instructions. I've looked up videos on YouTube and some people were demonstrating it incorrectly. Watch the manufacturer video, if in doubt. Be advised that this trap typically kills the squirrel instantaneous, but not always. I've witnessed it in action. Most of the time it works as intended and breaks the neck of the squirrel and it's over before they know what's happened. I've also seen a squirrel dodge into the trap and get their shoulder into the trap. If that happens, it's not quite so quick, FYI. There have also been a couple of occasions of some blood. Only 2 out of the 15, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Squirrels don't seem to care about smell, blood or their dead relatives. I've seen squirrels squeeze by a dead one to get the bait. Ruthless little rodents. If you need to reduce your squirrel population, look no further than this we'll engineered beauty. July 2025 update: approaching 80 squirrels that have been taken with this trap. Still functioning great. The only change I've made is to mount the trap on a larger, heavier and wider board, to keep it from getting overturned when a larger squirrel thrashes about for a few seconds if it's not killed instantly. Still plenty of squirrels in the neighborhood, but I'm doing my part to keep the population in check.

I didn't realize that I had a rock squirrel infestation until I purchase the Quell.CA outdoor squirrel trap. I feed ravens on a daily basis. It's going on seven years feeding ravens which attracts squirrels as well. I purchased this particular trap due to reviews on Amazon website and videos on YouTube. I thought I only had (1) domineering rock squirrel but it tuned out that I had (7). They all looked the same in size color and shape. I was nervous when I set the trap because it is not in my nature to use squirrel traps to get rid of them. Within 24 hours I killed 3 rock squirrels. On the second day I killed 4 more under 24 hours. When setting up this particular squirrel trap please use a lot of hand force to pull down the upper and lower lever and insert the arm bar into the trigger ring. I high suggest to practice a few times before sitting this particular squirrel trap. Try using the safety catch hook when practicing so you have a better idea on how to use the trap. I went on YouTube to have a better understand on how to use the trap. You MUST used a lot of hand force when setting the trap. I'm not that strong but I managed to set the traps by myself seven times with great determination. I now have control of the squirrels entering my property and know what to do for the next squirrel. Plus I saved a lot of money by NOT hiring a pest control who sprays toxic pesticides around property which can be harmful to human body! I'm now squirrel free of a living nightmare that I struggled for months ! I highly recommend Quell.Ca squirrel traps and you won't regret buying one. It's worth the money! The trap is very powerful and durable which can be used multiple times as the years go by.

The trap is well made, the metal is strong and works very effectively. Within days of setting up the trap I was able to catch the first squirrel in my attic. The trap does require some strength to engage the mechanism but that also ensures a very fast and pain free kill. 10/10 would highly recommend.

A little delay coming from "trapper central" (Canada) but really excellent. No question. Very good and strong construction. Should last for many years. Only, very small, downside is that you may have trouble pulling back the two sprung arms if you don't have strong wrists - but you'll find a way. Generally, this is an excellent and humane dispatcher of verminous tree rats. Updated: having now tried out this equipment several times: it really is excellent. Worth the price. Thoroughly recommended.
