Moisture holding mats
These mats have really helped my pots hold moisture. I recommend .

They seem to work quite well, but...
Given the image on the package showing that these are meant to be used in hanging planters, I had expected that these would be round and meant to be laid inside the planter but these are rectangular strips, not round, which meant that I needed to double up when I used them, which makes them less cost effective in my mind. They do the job, but you'll need to use more than one per hanging planter to make sure that you keep as much moisture in them as possible.

Used less water
I used these mats in my hanging baskets this year, I always pot up with geraniums. It's always been a struggle to keep up with the watering, sometimes twice a day depending on the heat. I used these mats to see how my plant would do. The results were excellent. I watered less and the plants never seems to go wilt even in the full sun heat. They stayed very healthy all Summer and would have kept going but needed to get them down before the cold weather hit. Will use them again next year, really happy I took the chance to try them.

Holds!
It holds water and soil, but is harder to shape than coir and less attractive. Best for square or rectangular containers.

Works great if you SOAK the plant when you water
At first I was disappointed because I watered just a little more than normal and the pads didn't seem to help any. Then I tried really soaking the hanging pots good...like watered good 3-4 times in one day before I left them for several days..in the almost 100 degree heat..and they held up great! So these will work if you really soak the pot (which I guess makes sense..you need to get enough water in the pot to soak the dirt AND let the pads absorb as much as they can). Of course I would only do this in a pot with drain holes..soaking that much without drains would not be good.

Great for hanging baskets
One of the problems with coir-lined baskets is that water runs out of them as soon as it’s put in. These liners when wet form a gel that retains the water. I can’t imagine planting baskets without them.

must have!
I have two outdoor hanging baskets which I line with coconut liners and boy, the soil drys out fast due to the air circulation. I use one or even two in each hanging pot to help with the water evaporation. I will never be without these liners! I have backup in my shed as we speak!
