Will this remove a dark varnish from pine floorboards?

No it won’t. Sanding - preferably with a hired heavy duty sander, is basically the only way to strip back floorboards and a lot less effort

Having just checked the tin regarding its contents, there is no description of the contents, although it does mention this is a caustic solution, highly toxic and flammable, it can be dissolved and washed off with water.
