The Afterburner is a two stage overdrive in a road-ready, aluminum and steel housing. The first stage is a straight-up overdrive for adding gain to the front-end of a tube amp. There are a lot of pedals out there, but this one just beckons to be played over and over. In a live setting, I find myself only using this pedal for everything, and its making my other overdrives and distortions jealous. Has a sweet sound and a nice blend of your clean signal in the sound to deliver a nice articulate overdrive, and a even clearer distortion when pushed. Update 8/10/14: Still using this as my main drive every week. Many other drive pedals have come and gone but this pedal continues to performe and pop so well in a live mix. I find that it takes overdrive and boost pedals really well in front of it. I like to use the EHX LPB-1 to push the pedal more when I'm really going over the top playing. The tone knob's sweep is clean and provides a great deal of options. Pumping the volume with the gain on 0 works as an amazing clean boost, and engaging the boost circuit pushes you into driven territory on a clean amp. The drive is transparent and clear, giving grit while also maintaining your pick attack clarity. It's a standard overdrive+boost circuit, not doing anything special, but doing its simple job well. A great option, but it exists in an already saturated market. For a few dollars more you can easily upgrade to something a bit more high end. If you're just starting in the world of drive, however, this is a great pedal choice.
