Yes, and no. Imitation can be like, if they colored a Sapphire to be a Ruby. So, if you buy a Ruby, and it tests Sapphire, it might be Sapphire. You will also want to buy the Presidium Refractometer for a better accuracy (I own both). However, even with both tools, it takes a keen eye, and training to truly know what you're looking at. However, both tools have successfully identified Diamond and Moissanite for me. (Back to the issue at hand). Natural is mined, where as synthetic is lab grown. This generally means that the hardness index will be very similar to the real thing. If you find imitation, it can be anything from a different stone that's been colored, all the way to colored/dyed glass.
