Impressive Long-Range Detection
The UNIDEN R4 Extreme Long-Range Laser/Radar Detector is one of the best radar detectors I’ve used, offering excellent performance, reliable alerts, and plenty of features to keep you aware of speed traps and law enforcement presence on the road. Its extreme range and accuracy make it a must-have for anyone who spends a lot of time on the highway. Pros: Incredible long-range detection: The standout feature of the UNIDEN R4 is its exceptional long-range detection. It consistently picks up radar and laser signals well in advance, giving me plenty of time to adjust my speed. Even on wide, open highways, this detector can pick up signals from several miles away, which has saved me from speed traps more times than I can count. Accurate and reliable alerts: The R4 provides highly accurate alerts with minimal false alarms. It does a great job filtering out unnecessary alerts from automatic door sensors and other non-threat sources, which is often a problem with cheaper detectors. The advanced filtering technology ensures you get alerted only when it matters, keeping the ride smooth without constant beeping from false signals. Multiple radar bands covered: The R4 covers a wide range of radar bands (K, Ka, X, and laser), ensuring you’re protected from virtually any radar gun or speed trap. The inclusion of laser detection is a big plus, especially for drivers in areas where law enforcement uses advanced speed detection technology. GPS functionality: The built-in GPS is incredibly useful for storing your driving history, as well as for marking red-light cameras and frequently encountered speed traps. You can also mute alerts in certain areas (like near your home or office) where you know the signals aren’t threats. This further helps reduce false alerts and keeps your focus on the road. Customizable alerts and settings: The R4 comes with a range of settings you can tailor to your driving style. Whether you prefer quieter alerts, different volume levels, or specific radar sensitivity, this detector allows you to fine-tune the experience to your liking. I found the voice alerts to be especially useful as they allow me to keep my eyes on the road while staying informed of any nearby threats. Cons: Learning curve for settings: While the customization options are great, they can be a bit overwhelming for new users. The menu isn’t the most intuitive, so you might need to spend some time with the manual to fully understand and utilize all the features. Once you get used to it, though, the customization becomes a huge advantage. Tips for Use: Mount the detector high on your windshield: For the best range and detection performance, place the detector high on your windshield, just below the rearview mirror. This helps the R4 capture radar and laser signals from farther distances. Regularly update the firmware: Make sure to keep the firmware updated through UNIDEN’s website. The updates improve the filtering, GPS database, and overall performance, keeping your detector current with the latest threats. Customize the settings for local laws: Depending on your area, you may want to adjust the radar bands or sensitivity settings to align with local enforcement methods. This helps ensure you’re only getting the alerts that matter most. Overall Experience: The UNIDEN R4 Extreme Long-Range Laser/Radar Detector has been an absolute game-changer for me. It offers fantastic long-range detection, and its accuracy and advanced filtering system ensure you’re alerted to real threats, not just random signals. The GPS functionality and customizable settings are invaluable, allowing me to personalize my driving experience and further cut down on false alarms. It’s especially helpful for anyone who regularly drives on highways or in areas with heavy law enforcement presence. Though it’s a bit of an investment, the performance and peace of mind make it well worth the cost.

Best on the market
I’ve had this for more than a year and feel it’s absolutely amazing! It works fine out of the box but if you take a moment and go through the settings and turn off the K band you almost eliminate any false alarms from store alarms. This is 100% accurate and it picks up a single five miles away. It warns you to slow down way before they even know your coming. I feel the R4 is the best bang for your buck it has all the features of the more expensive units at half the price, less the directional arrows showing were the signal is coming from. But that doesn’t really matter because you were warned to slow down!

Good product, very happy with it
Radars are near or far, it alerts you, so it does its job... Only weird thing I found is it came with a generic suction cup mount and a high quality suction cup with a level which will NOT fall off at all, but whatever. I hooked it up to my PC, downloaded the update tool and updates which took all of 2 minutes, went smooth as butter. It was nice to see that you can also completely configure every setting from your PC and even save the settings on your PC in case you ever need to reset it for whatever reason. Nice little touch. This thing picks up cops from literally a mile away if not more and it does fantastic at auto-ignoring the false alarms. You literally just have to.... SET IT, AND FORGET IT! lol had to. I would recommend this and I am glad I did my research and chose this one. The only thing I would like which I know costs more, would be arrows but I only wanted a midrange because I don't really speed (only when others are speeding on the highway) and this is more than good enough for me and probably 90% of you. CON: Only one con for me. There is no native app even though it has bluetooth which is rather odd but, it does work with at least one particular app called "highway radar" but me being an IT guy still found setting it up very cumbersome and honestly I don't even use the app. I mean I have Waze on my car screen, the detector, so one more thing to look at is too many in my opinion so the bluetooth honestly seems useless. If they had their own app like Cobra does, it would make more sense. I guess not so much a con, but it's just odd, why have bluetooth at all? Maybe for dash cams? I honestly don't know.

Paid for itself several times over in the first month on city streets and also road tripping.
This thing is alarmingly sensitive (pun intended!) I got this for "Blue Streak", my acceleration boosted Tesla Model Y dual motor, after several close scrapes. I last used a radar detector since the 80s. Man-o-man have things changed. The new one is, as one would expect, an order of magnitude better compared to what I remember using, for roughly the same money I spent on the first one 40 years ago. It is feature laden, even without accompanying it with the available (for small cost) smartphone app. I got accustomed to it in no time. Granted, its not the top of the line, but neither is the price It is a far better than I was expecting (especially compared to the old days and considering inflation!) You can block out common frequency ranges used by radar/lidar sensors so that it doesn't false alert every time you pass a Porsche or Lexus. You can set it to "auto" mode so that it knows if you are on the high way vs. a city street. Even with the filtered city mode, I was recently alerted far more than a mile ahead of a K band speed trap. I could have spent more money on the latest and greatest model, but probably am just as satisfied with this mid range.

One year later- I love it!
I'm glad I spent the extra money to upgrade to this unit instead of going cheap. My favorite feature is the Auto Mute Memory- it eliminated most false alarms in the city (Tucson). I live in Benson and drive to Tucson daily. My second favorite feature is the User Added Mark- I have every place marked that Arizona DPS can or does park (mostly median turn-arounds). I get a friendly reminder 1000 feet before each mark so I'm on the lookout. Most enforcement I've past leave their radar on constantly but one time I went by one of my marked spots, I saw him in time to slow down and as I passed he turned it on and the detector sounded off. Another feature I really like is that the volume of the alarm cuts itself down after a few seconds so that it's not so annoying- easy to ignore after slowing down so I don't need to press Mute. Tucson PD motorcycle enforcement uses Lazer (I was hit with it once) but I'm sure they will get me some day because, unlike radar that gives you at least a half mile of warning, I got virtually no warning before I was hit. I think I got a small reflection from the car right in front of me before he hit me. Luckily traffic was thick with no ability to speed. Now I can't drive without it. I have it permanently installed (hardwired) in my daily driver but when I drive the family car it's super easy to move and comes with an extra power supply for a cigarette lighter outlet and suction cup adapter for the windshield. You just push a button on the top to release the bracket from the detector and unplug the phone like plug and move it. It even has a case to put it in when you take it out at the hotel. One of my best, if not THE best purchase I've ever made!

Like not Love here’s why….
LIKE not Love only because of false alarms. BUT to be fair I haven’t updated in a year and I believe it has better capabilities now just a pain for me because no computer. I wish they had had an R4W. Wi-fi then. But overall happy. The first day I used it it saved me two lanes heading in the same direction I was in the fast lane and it started beeping so I slowed down and got behind a car that was actually passing me as soon as I changed lanes and started beeping faster and I gave him highbeam flashes, but he just kept going about 70 in a 55 and sure enough around the corner state patrol unmarked pulled him over. I was bummed for him but laughing out loud for me because that absolutely would have been me getting a ticket so it paid for itself the first day I used it and has saved me several times since I don’t speed around, but I do find myself going a bit over and it’s just peace of mind worth having

Blown away by the tech in this Radar Detector
When I was younger and had more flashy vehicles and sport cars, I always had a Radar Detector. Now that I am a bit older, and daily drive an F150, I hadn't thought about one in years. After reading some tech magazine, I saw the new line of Uniden RD's and thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to get one. WOW, has this tech changed in the last 10-15 years. Maybe it is just this model, but the features list is intense. - GPS - It will automatically learn my geolocation driving and will auto-mute "False" triggers. I can manually enter some as well, but if it sees the same X or K band at the same location, it stops alerting me of this because of its algorithm. - Range is ridiculous. I will sometimes run Waze on my dash along side the R4 Extreme and I will see a cop a mile or so ahead and around a curve, and this thing will almost always start alerting me before either one of us can see each other. - Custom. You can change colors, display theme, sounds. There is even a R4 Companion App for iOS (not by Uniden) that works great with it as well. You can see more geek stats on the app including GPS Maps and alerts instead of using the small screen that is on a RD. All in all, I am so glad i got this RD. It has gone above my expectations in many ways. If and when I get a 2nd car again, I will undoubtedly be getting another R4 Extreme to put in that one. Don't think twice about it, just pick one up now.
