I’ve been airbrushing for 50 years and I’ve always used rattle can primer for my models. I wanted to start airbrushing my models and this primer works great! Great flow through my iwata HP-BC airbrush. This paint covers well with great adhesion. The color is a little light for me , I use white resin for my models and it was hard to tell if I covered the whole model. So I mixed in some black airbrush paint and then I could differentiate between my white model and the primer. The hand in my photo was painted before I added the black. The base and the eyeball were painted after I added a small amount of black to the primer. I’m very pleased with this primer and I will use it on all of my models from now on.

Good primer works well on gunpla models from my experience

I got one of those cheap chinese no name air brushes just for priming and loaded it up with this stuff. Doesn't matter how bad the air brush, this just coats and sticks like freaking magic. They grey is actually pretty whitish, and I like how smooth it sticks to the plastic, leaving details intact. I specifically sprayed it on some of the cheapest board game quality models I had, some cheesy ones for the intro to D&D box set from 1990s, and they suddenly looked and felt like proper wargaming minis. Playing with acrylics and stains, the primer just soaks things up and sticks. Now I'm eager to go get a better air brush and see how it looks, probably even better details. I have a 30 year old orc battalion box set to paint up, and this right here will be the primer than brings the night goblins to the table.

Vallejo airbrush primers are just generally 'pretty good.' I typically use the black an don't have any real issues with it. If priming several models at once or larger pieces - essentially any longer airbrushing sessions - you will run into tip dry and the paint in your cup with start to thicken. Keeping an eye on your needle and the paint still in your airbrush cup will go a long way to alleviating your priming frustrations. The grey looks good and goes on smoothly, just like the black. It does have a tendency to thicken up and 'gum up' the airbrush a bit more than the black. Basically, where with the black you can add a drop or two of thinner and just go... you'll really want to watch the grey a bit more and play with the thinning to make sure you're still getting coverage along with a smooth spray. Anyway, if you airbrush regularly you'll figure it out. Where this shines is the VALUE. You'll be able to prime HUNDREDS of minis with one bottle. That is no exaggeration. $12-$16 dollars usually is what this goes for. Compare that with a single rattle can from Citadel or Army Painter. It's absolutely no contest is you're trying to save some money. I have not had any issues after years with Vallejo airbrush primers with adhesion. BUT - I will say - and I think this is a bonus - it strips very well. Soaking in Simple Green will strip paint and primer with a couple days and an old tooth brush. I personally like that. And since I don't have adhesion issues - this is a no brainer. It allows me to relax and if I make mistakes I don't sweat it. Another bonus of airbrush primers is you won't run into any issues where a can isn't mixed and gives you that hydrophobic coat. You get a smooth prime every time. Again, providing you know how to airbrush. Anyway, enough rambling. This is great. Saves money.

I jumped on a bottle of this Vallejo Gray primer as soon as I saw the largest size on sale for $10.00. Man, what a STEAL! I had heard good things about this primer but already had plenty of Rust-Oleum gray primer in a rattle can that had served me well up to that point. But I was looking for an acrylic primer so that I could use it indoors with my airbrush. This stuff couldn't fill that bill any better! It applies very easily with a 1-1 ratio of thinner to primer, and I also add a drop or two of Vallejo Flow Improver and a drop of Vallejo Retarder Medium as well, just like I do with a lot of their colors. The smell is slightly sweet but not unpleasant, and a whole lot more acceptable than lacquer or enamel paints. It dries very quickly and is very durable. I also bought some of the black Vallejo primer but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I'm totally sold on this Vallejo line of paints, washes, and primers. They've made getting back into modeling a real pleasure!

Excellent stuff. Requires very little thinning. Sprays beautifully

I tried airbrushing this product on GW plastic models and some BattleTech models from CGL. The product sprayed out nicely once I got the airbrush dialed in. I used a single action external mix siphon feed airbrush at about 25-30 psi. I probably could’ve gone lower pressure, depending on the mix (as mentioned below). I experimented a bit with adding in some thinner to the mix at about a 1:2 thinner to paint ratio. It didn’t seem to need the thinner to work though, and I was able to get a good stream by using the straight product too. I take this as a good thing, as it doesn’t need thinner but it plays well with that if you want or need to thin it. It might be nice if you want to do a very thin coat. Adhesion was not a problem, though by test spraying it I could see that it was kind of runny if there was just too much paint in the mix. That was fixed by adjusting the airbrush. The grey is quite like the Corax White spray from GW. It really looks quite white unless you have a pure white against it. This isn’t a drawback, but it does seem to make this more suited for lighter color schemes than darker ones. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone with an airbrush and a lot of models to prime. While $20 for 200ml isn’t super cheap, the amount of priming (and quality priming at that) this bottle can do really blows away the canned competition. You need to have the right gear and sufficient project to justify this, but I don’t think it is a purchase anyone will regret.
