Glad I chose Volk
Volk lenses are always the better choice. I was tempted to go with a less expensive option, but the best optics and best quality are more important in the end.

The best all purpose lens for diagnosis, hands down.
My ideal choice for an all purpose diagnostic lens. A lot of students are taught to examine the fundus with a 90D lens, but personally I find that lens is too small for my personal comfort. The magnification factor on the 78D lens is larger in comparison, so it will be more difficult to use on an undilated patient (it's only drawback in my opinion), decreasing the field of view. However, since the ring size of the 78D lens is physically larger than the 90D lens by a great deal, I find myself seeing more of the fundus than I do with a 90D lens and I have to move the lens less in comparison. Also I find that I have better resolution of small details, better stereopsis, and can diagnose more subtle findings with better certainty. Instead of decreasing the image quality by increasing the magnification on the slit lamp, the mag is already higher with equal clarity allowing for more optimized images. This lets me see small details like subtle ERM and small hemorrhages. In the periphery of the lens, the asphericity of the lens changes, so the clarity drops slightly-but still the clarity is excellent.I do use a blue ring version of this lens but I don't find that changes the clarity or adds any more glare than a black version. With indirect lenses (and gold/silver lens rings) I have found this to be quite an issue in the past. Also I find that the working distance on this lens is easy to work with. Some lenses have working distances that are uncomfortably close to the patient where the lens gets dirty or their eyelashes touch the back surface. This lens is around 1 cm.My favorite lens-all around. Hands down-you won't be disappointed, and they are workhorses and last a lifetime.
