Not Resting On Her Laurels
Far be it for me to question her decision to support a mediocre performer like Harry Styles on his 2022 U.K. tour, but all I can say is that I hope those screaming fans fully appreciate the presence of the supremely talented Mitski. Back with her first album since 2018, I'm delighted to report that her latest opus 'Laurel Hell' maintains the high songwriting standard of her previous works. Furthermore, that silky distinctive voice of hers still carries an emotional punch, and the power to melt the coldest of hearts. Still wearing on her sleeve what she sees as her own personal flaws, Mitski addresses her over impulsive nature on 'Everyone' and is characteristically self flagellating on 'Working For The Knife', the only track to feature prominent guitar. Heavily reliant on washes of synth, 'Laurel Hell' is nonetheless full of great songs with memorable hooks and choruses. In that sense, the finger poppin' 'Stay Soft' is the first to really hit home, and it does so complete with a few suggestive -or is that just me? - lyrics thrown in. Elsewhere 'The Only Heartbreaker' is very 80's in it's feel and execution. And it's the type of bouncy, uplifting song that - despite it's theme of love on the wane - you might imagine Belinda Carlisle having covered. Similarly 'Love Me More' with it's insanely catchy refrain would have been pounced upon by someone like Cyndi Lauper back in the day, I'm pretty sure of that. The vaguely Motown rhythm's of 'Should've Been Me' should give Mr. Styles something to think about in his dressing room, because this is a potential big crowd pleaser, and if it goes down like it should then he'll have an uphill task following that. It may touch upon domestic squabbling, but - like the enchanting 'Lonesome Love' from her previous record - 'That's Our Lamp' is far too short. Yet it's still a superb song to close this album with and - it wouldn't surprise me - her upcoming 'live' set. Look out Harry, Mitski's coming and she's armed to the teeth with dynamite material. Very highly recommended.
