Ok so the round tool centers the rear cover for the rear main but what holds it straight so its inline with the block so pan doesnt crack when torqed?

Tool centers rear cover. Torque all but the two long bolts of the rear cover to spec. Once rear cover with all rear facing bolts in and torqued to spec, you can install the two long bolts that insert from the bottom. Cover will stay in position if proper torqued correctly. Remove alignment tool and install new rear main seal. Done. Hope I answered your question. P.S; don't forget the to run a bead of sealant where the bottom of the rear cover and oil pan come together on each side.

Works great for centering the front and rear seals

There is no plate to flush up the rear cover like there is for the front. Not sure I have seen one offered in an after market tool though. Still don't know why GM didn't just put locating dowel pins in to align the covers. This will definitely center the front and rear seals, but as you know, it's more about trying to keep them centered and adjusting the plate so as not to hang over the edge or to be to high or low on one side. Probably could do the job without these tools but it did simplify centering the seals on the crank shaft. Materiel did seem to be pretty nice and was finished well.
