ACR1252U USB NFC Reader III

Bought this to write several NTAG-215 NFC chips for a client of mine (the ever-popular Tap to Review stuff), and this thing made it seamless. I know that there's a free app for your phone that lets you do the same thing, but you try manually typing 40+ unique case-sensitive URL's on your phone without going insane. You do have to download the drivers from the ACS website in order to get the NFC Tools desktop app to recognize the writer, but once they're installed it's a seamless experience. Can't recommend it enough. Admittedly, this unit is a bit overkill for just writing NTAG-215 chips, however if I was going to buy a desktop unit to write chips with, I figured I might as well spend the extra $30-$40 and get the one that can write to more than just the one type.

I purchased this to use in conjunction with a Yubikey 5 NFC for logging into Windows machines as an MFA token (using Authlite on the back end). Once I got it figured out it works perfectly ... but it doesn't work without swapping the drivers for the reader (read on for more). First you have to have Authlite installed on the machine with the NFC support option. When you connect this NFC reader Windows is going to detect it as a generic Microsoft smart card reader, with this driver installed the reader does not work properly. I found that I had to go to the manufacturers website and download the drivers for the reader (they are provided as a convenient MSI file as well for deployment). Once those drivers are installed I could get the reader to work with the Yubikey and it would fill in my MFA value. One thing to remember is the reader will beep twice in this usage ... once when the key is detected, then about a second later the yubikey value will be entered for you, then it beeps again to say its complete. Hopefully that helps someone else down the road. Now that I have that sorted out I'll be able to use the NFC readers in a factory setting to make things a little easier for my users.

As a Technical Professional, I perhaps have unrealistically high expectations for my electronic purchases. I always expect problems with drivers, firmware or software. HOWEVER - I was pleasantly surprised with this unit. I easily downloaded the driver from the manufacturer (Advanced Card Systems) website. I painlessly installed the Windows 10 driver and a couple of the ACS programs. The software and drivers worked immediately without any problems nor lost time on my part to make it all work. My compliments to ACS! I downloaded some 3rd-party software to test as well. NFC21 programs (free) immediately connected with the reader/writer without any issues. I was very impressed with the NFC21 software working so nicely for my testing of NFC NTag215 disks. Using the ACR1252U Reader/Writer has been great my NFC tag experiments and work. I now have to purchase an additional unit for an employee because I won't share my unit. I am using it daily and don't want the hassle of unplug/plug each time they need to use it. The price was good enough and it works so well for me so far that the labor costs I didn't spend on driver and software installation problems easily pays for a second device.

These work great with Windows out of the box with no need for drivers to be installed. Also works great with Windows 365 Link!

Works well with Linux. Easy to read, write and erase NFC tags.

Doesn't work, just makes a beep sound nothing else.

I was a little taken back at first. Came in a very light cardboard box with a little bubble wrap. No instructions, no URL to the manufacturer's website, nothing. I now think of this as an electronic component rather than a consumer product. A quick query to Google Gemini brought up all the links to drivers, suggested apps, and general guidelines. Turned out I didn't need any of it except for the suggested apps. It was completely plug and play on Windows 11. I downloaded NFC Tools from Wak Dev (one of the recommendations) and was reading and writing tags within minutes.

Het product werd geleverd in een kleine witte kartonnen doos (zonder handleiding o.i.d.) en paste als pakket door de brievenbus. Windows 10 herkende het zonder problemen en na wat zoeken kon ik op het internet een aantal NFC reader/writer programma's vinden waarmee ik de werking van de NFC tag reader/writer kon testen. After a few of these NFC devices this one actually works, with PC and Mac intel and silicon. Make sure you are on a tech level to change the mode to scan the cards and program them.
