Does the job
For such an inexpensive device, it's quite effective. I got it primarily for my Fiskars splitting axe (works very well) but also works very nicely for knives of different sizes. Pleasantly surprised, actually, given some of the negative reviews. It is lightweight (a plus in my book), so you have to kind of lean on it when using with larger items like an axe, but does the job a lot easier than trying to get the edge perfect with a file!

Works wonders, but read my tip
I figure that the people who make knives also know how best to create a product that keeps them sharp. I’ll give you a tip; NEVER use this dry. Sharpen your knife with this product under running cold water, and the hone it. I’ve had a kitchen knife for over 35 years, and it is still called “the scary knife” by my friends, thanks to this product.

NOT an Axe Sharpener
Although this is labeled as a knife and axe sharpener, there are two problems with actually being able to sharpen an axe with this, 1) the slot is far too narrow to allow most axes to even contact the sharpening wheels. It will accept a small axe with a narrow blade like a hudson bay, but not a michigan, jersey or dayton and definitely not a splitting maul. Also it removes only a tiny bit of material from the very edge of the blade, so won't even have an effect on a dull axe. It would be a good finisher for a narrow axe is all and 2) it is very flimsy and would break under the weight of a 3.5# axe head. It is very awkward to manage even a narrow axe with this, I tried. The rubber feet fell out in the first 10 strokes and the plastic base moves around and gets cut with each stroke under a full size axe.As a knife sharpener it is marvelous!!! You just have to learn to keep the part of the blade which is contacting the stones level while swiping it through the sharpener. As as example when sharpening a carving knife you have to raise the handle as the curved part of the blade goes through. There is only a tiny space between the level of a straight blade and the plastic base, so tipping the blade too much or not enough makes it drag on the base and raise up from the stones defeating the purpose. With some practice, this is a great KNIFE sharpener. For axes get a Lansky Puck, dual grit long stone with an handle like a file, or a diamond stone.

Horrible packaging, cheap plastic and product missing parts
I ordered one of these sharpeners this week. It arrived in packaging that looked like it had been torn apart and pieced back together. The only thing holding the sharpener to the packaging was a very loose zip tie. It was also missing one of the small rubber nubs on the bottom that held it in place. It appeared like it had been sold, used and returned before being sent out to me as a new item. After a replacement was ordered and sent, the second one was in even worse condition. This package was also all torn up. The two part cardboard that holds the item in place was completely torn apart and held together (barely) with a couple of staples. This replacement sharpener was missing two of the three rubber nubs that keep it from sliding around as you sharpen an item. It is a very cheap lightweight piece of plastic and does not look very durable. Especially considering it is “designed” to sharpen an axe or hatchet. While the sharpener appears to function ok for a cheap sharpener, one misstep with an axe and it is likely to slice right through the cheap plastic. And a drop would probably shatter it. Without the rubber nubs, it is also difficult to hold steady while trying to sharpen an axe or even a hatchet. Don’t waste your money on this cheaply made and packaged piece of plastic.

Sharpens a Parang like nobody's business. Paper slicing sharp!
I purchased this sharpener for my Fiskars x11 small hatchet that I had purchased a while back. I haven't used the hatchet enough yet so I looked around my garage to sharpen something with this new tool. I had a cheesy but functional Bear Grylls Gerber Parang/ machete in my garage that I never managed to get as sharp as I would have liked. I held the sharpener in my left hand and rolled/ dragged the parang back and forth through the sharpener and it felt like it wasn't doing anything which is what I expected. I ran the parang back and forth 30 times and looked at the edge and was shocked to find a nice sharp edge on the parang. I used it outside on some brush clearing and was curious how sharp it was. I grabbed some printer paper and started slicing clean strips of paper off to my amazement! So far this thing is fantastic. Its very light weight plastic and it feels like it will break when you use it but for the price point I think this is just an amazing sharpener.
