Does the 50 gal aquarium truly weigh 87 lbs.?

Acrylic weighs a lot less than glass. I only have the 20 gallon but it's weight is accurate as stated on info.

What is required to get this aquarium up and running

The ‘combo’ includes just the tank and light. If you are keeping tropical fish, then you need a filter for sure (which will require mechanical and chemical filter pads) , and likely a heater, and an air pump/stone for oxygenation of the water.

What sets this product apart that it's more than 3x the price of other empty fish tanks?

As answered above, the acrylic which is added strength and less weight than glass. You will note ce there are no seams required like glass tanks have. It can scratch more easily however, so if you have young kids or careless adults, consider that aspect before buying.
