Q: Will a size XLarge be a good fit for a 42" waist?

Sounds like a good selection for you. On llbean.com website, a man's waist of 40"-42" is in the XL column, XXL is 44"-46" and Large is 36" to 38.'' For UDT shorts on Amazon's website, sizing shows a listing of "XLarge" and when 'details' is selected, also shows 40"-42." Tru-Spec usually lists by actual inches in waist size; mine is 32" at bellybutton so I ordered a 32" short and it fits perfect. Most vendors show by inches, but when you check availability, 40" seems to be the largest offered on any of them. These are high-waisted shorts, so be sure to measure your waist at bellybutton area, not hips. My choice was Avalanche Brands with a 'Fulfillment by Amazon' guarantee. Happy shopping.
